Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First U.S. Edition. Translated and edited by Roger Parker. THE STORY OF GIUSEPPE VERDI, Gabriele Baldini's study of the operas of Verdi from Oberto to Un ballo in maschera, has, since its posthumous publication in 1970, received much critical acclaim both in Italy and elsewhere. Its lack of technical language makes it easily accessible to the general music lover, but its original and sometimes controversial ideas have stimulated a great deal of discussion among Verdi specialists. The book's central concern is to present an analysis of Verdi the musical dramatist, and its conclusions constitute a radical reassessment of the vexed relationship between opera and literary form, between words and music. As Julian Budden says in his foreword: 'It blows a breath of fresh air into the weary platitudes of traditional Verdian criticism.' This English translation, THE STORY OF GIUSEPPE VERDI, includes some new editorial additions, bringing various factual matters into line with recent Verdi scholarship. But the book's discussion of the music is always left to speak for itself. While many of the comments may offend the purist, they are always based on a profound knowledge and love of Verdi's operatic masterpieces as seen on the stage. They rarely fail to stimulate the reader into thinking more deeply about this immensely rich repertoire. Very fine, unread, first edition, first printing, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket. {Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} BIOS1.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Interesting cover art not credited. (illustratore). La Santa Di Bleecker Street, (Lyrics & Music) by Gian Carlo Menotti; Rhythmic Version Translated from the English by Fedele D'Amico. Lovely Petite Paperback Book, Opera, Text Only, In Italian. Issued 1955 by Ricordi in Milan. OP The publisher Ricordi, of Milan issued a series of Opera texts in petite paperback format, each of which was graced with a beautiful cover illustration. The artist was not credited. This book was issued text only, sans music. This 1955 book is "La Santa Di Bleecker Street", Dramma Musicale in tre Atti" : The text & music for the operetta were originally written in English by Gian Carlo Menotti, the great Italian-American composer & librettist. The words in this edition were translated into Italian by Fedele D'Amico. Menotti was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Music for "The Saint of Bleecker Street" This book contains the words only -- there is no music -- no score. It is, in large part, for the cover art that I was attracted to this little gem. The cover illustration, printed in red and black, speaks to the artistic zeitgeist that was in the air in mid-century Europe - its modernistic lines deliciously and delicately evoke A New York City street in Little Italy on which the protagonists - a young woman suffering visions and stigmati, and the brother who would protect her against the world - are held statically by their personal drama and the power of a community. Even with the effects of time impressed on it cover, this little book retains its charm. It's a lovely little book.
