About the book >.>.> This publication commemorates the ninetieth anniversary of The Baltimore Museum of Art?s founding and the fiftieth anniversary of the donation of the African art collection by Janet and Alan Wurtzburger. Their contribution established a permanent display of African art within the museum, highlighting a significant commitment to this field amidst the institution's ongoing expansion. The Wurtzburger gift reinforced a trajectory initiated by the museum's exhibition programme, beginning with the 1936 exhibition, African Negro Art, and followed by An Exhibition of African Art in 1946, noted for showcasing African art from American collections. Prior to the Wurtzburger's donation, significant contributions included ancient Egyptian and Coptic pieces from Florence Levy and Blanche Adler, alongside numerous gifts from collectors like Saidie A. May and Robert Garrett, which enriched the museum?s offerings.Exploring the aesthetic appreciation for African art, the Wurtzburgers joined a tradition exemplified by other collectors, such as the renowned Cone sisters, who recognised the artistic value of African objects in the context of modern art movements. The collection has continued to grow through the contributions of various donors, including Mr. and Mrs. A. Harvey Schreyer and numerous others, who have provided an extensive array of artefacts that significantly enrich the museum?s narrative.Principal author Dr. Frederick John Lamp has meticulously curated a selection of objects from diverse geographical and cultural contexts across Africa. This collection encompasses various media, including ceramics, textiles, beadwork, and ritual art, chosen for both their aesthetic merit and cultural significance.
