Paperback. Condizione: New. The stories of the Cherokee people presented here capture in written form tales of history, myth, and legend for readers, speakers, and scholars of the Cherokee language. Assembled by noted authorities on Cherokee, this volume marks an unparalleled contribution to the linguistic analysis, understandin…g, and preservation of Cherokee language and culture.Cherokee Narratives spans the spectrum of genres, including humor, religion, origin myths, trickster tales, historical accounts, and stories about the Eastern Cherokee language. These stories capture the voices of tribal elders and form a living record of the Cherokee Nation and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians' oral tradition. Each narrative appears in four different formats: the first is interlinear, with each line shown in the Cherokee syllabary, a corresponding roman orthography, and a free English translation; the second format consists of a morpheme-by-morpheme analysis of each word; and the third and fourth formats present the entire narrative in the Cherokee syllabary and in a free English translation. The narratives and their linguistic analysis are a rich source of information for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of the Cherokee syllabary, as well as for students of Cherokee history and culture. By enabling readers at all skill levels to use and reconstruct the Cherokee language, this collection of tales will sustain the life and promote the survival of Cherokee for generations to come.

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. Personal yearbook of former band teacher at Chilocco Indian Boarding School, Larry Eugene Johnson w/ signature to fep. Featuring class photos of actor and Academy Honorary Award recipient, Wes Studi as well as Cherokee National Treasure and "modern-day Sequoyah", Durbin Feeling. Signed by Studi on c…lass photo "Studie/ Cattiest". Numerous signatures and inscriptions from students to "Mr. Johnson" throughout. Stapled wraps w/ minor soiling and edgewear. Born in Nofire Hollow, OK, Wes Studi would go on to appear in more than 80 film and television roles, winning several accolades including the Academy Honorary Award in 2020. Durbin Feeling would go on to co-write the first Cherokee-English Dictionary which remains the standard publication for Cherokee language reference as well as contributing to the addition of the Cherokee syllabary to Unicode, which allows the language to be widely available on computers and smartphones. Feeling is the namesake of the Cherokee Nation's language learning center and 2022 legislation protecting indigenous languages (the Durbin Feeling Native American Languages Act). Chilocco Indian Agricultural School (also known as Chilocco Indian School) was a federal off-reservation boarding school established to house, "civilize", Christianize, educate, and transform American Indian youth. Thousands of Native children and young adults passed under the school's entryway arch, the architectural marker of "civilized" space since Greek and Roman times. Located between Arkansas City, Kansas and Ponca City, Oklahoma, Chilocco was one of many federal schools designed to dissolve tribal identity and erase Indigenous beliefs and practices. From 1884 until the early 1930s Chilocco operated according to a template devised by U.S. Army officer Richard H. Pratt at Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. The large off-reservation schools used rigorous military discipline and stressed instruction in trades and manual and domestic labor known as "actual work". Through the 1960s and 1970s changing social conditions, growing Native enrollments in public schools, critiques of boarding school conditions, and federal reluctance to fund and operate schools for American Indians (despite treaty and trust obligations) led to the closure of many institutions. Chilocco closed its doors in 1980. Signed by Author(s).
