This book details the specific obligations of a university to its faculty and students, as well as the obligations owed to the state in which it exists. The author begins with a discussion of the land-grant colleges, the conditions for their establishment, and the expectations placed on them by the government. Drawing on historical documents and a deep understanding of the American educational system, the author traces the development of these institutions. Covering the evolution of the University of Maine, from its founding to the turn of the century, this book provides valuable insights into the historical, educational, and political context of American higher education. Exploring the evolving relationship between the university and the state of Maine, this book highlights many of the tensions and challenges faced by institutions of higher education in the United States. In this book, the author clarifies the role of a university and its obligations to the state and to the students it serves. Challenging the prevailing notion of a uniform, Roman-derived system, the author argues that Anglo-Saxon towns were a direct outgrowth of the Germanic settlements that preceded them. Utilising a body of source material including land charters, legal codes, chronicles, and archaeological evidence, the author explores the composition, physical character, and government of Anglo-Saxon towns. Drawing parallels with contemporaneous continental Germanic towns, they demonstrate the organic growth of the Anglo-Saxon urban system, from military encampments to economic and administrative hubs. The book provides a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Anglo-Saxon urban life, revealing the complexities of its political and legal structures, its evolving relationship with the surrounding countryside, and its significant contribution to the development of English civic institutions.
