DESCRIPTION - Destined to become a classic of light verse, Partingtime Hall is the work of James Fenton and John Fuller, two of our wittiest and most resourceful poets. A few of these pieces have already appeared in various magazines to fugitive renown, but the majority have been specially written for this volume. Collected together, they demonstrate conclusively what the poetry world already suspected that Fuller and Fenton belong in the front rank of our funny poets. Technically adroit, inventive, whimsical, anarchic, risqué, and, in their strangely heightened way, true, these poems deserve the large enthusiastic audience which has been waiting impatiently for this definitive joint performance. inventory #11788.

Endpapers of book by Daniel Buren. "Since public museums came into being in the late 18th century, artists have looked upon them with a mixture of reverence, complicity, suspicion, and disdain. In The Museum as Muse, artists of many persuasions speak their minds about museums, their functions and spaces, their practices and politics, and their relationship to the art they contain. More than 60 artists are represented by a wide range of works: photographs of museum patrons by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliot Erwitt; 'personal museums' and 'cabinets of curiosities' by Charles Wilson Peale, Marcel Duchamp, and Claes Oldenburg; fantasies of the destruction or transformation of museums by Hubert Robert, Ed Ruscha, and Christo and more, including works created especially for this project by contemporary artists, and an anthology of statements and writings by artists about museums. This volume was published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including a 6 mm. tear to spine edge and bumping of upper edge of recto. Light yellowing of page edges. Contents otherwise clean and unmarked.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Why should a poet feel the need to be original What is the relationship between genius and apprenticeship James Fenton, Oxford Professor of Poetry 1994-1999 and winner of the Whitbread Prize for Poetry, examines some of the most intriguing questions behind the making of the art - issues of creativity and the 'earning' of success, of judgement, tutorage, rivalry, and ambition. With the contextual richness of a former foreign-correspondent, Fenton goes on to consider the juvenilia of Wilfred Owen, the 'scarred' lines of Philip Larkin, the inheritance of imperialism, and issues of 'constituency' in Seamus Heaney. He looks too at Marianne Moore, Elizabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, and their contrasting 'feminisms', at D. H. Lawrence, 'welcoming the dark'; and in the end, W. H. Auden - that defining influence upon Fenton's own poetry - who receives extended coverage in the final quarter of the book.Immensely readable, The Strength of Poetry is a major account of modern poetry from one of its leading figures.
