The first edition of the first postwar Scottish verse anthology, signed by Scottish literary figure Hugh MacDiarmid. The signed first edition of Northern Numbers: Being Representative Selections From Certain Living Scottish Poets, the first postwar Scottish anthology, amalgamated and signed by Scottish poet and literary figure Charles Murray Grieve, popular known as Hugh MacDiarmid. Published in 1920 by T.N. Fouls. In the publisher's original quarter cloth, with blue paper boards. MacDiarmid's signed inscription is to the blank before half-title, dated to 1962.This particularly early work is one of the first written by Charles Murray Grieve, before he ever used the pen name Hugh MacDiarmid. A recent First World War veteran and a journalist at the time, MacDiarmid would become a key figure in Scottish poetry, writing in a 'Synthetic Scots' which fused many local dialects. In this anthology, he wishes to bring to light the excellent work of contemporary Scottish poets, with all the contributors, including Neil Munro, John Ferguson and Violet Jacobs, being personal friends. In the publisher's original quarter cloth, with blue paper boards. Externally, very smart, with minimal marks and shelf wear. Very minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and very slight rubbing to the joints. A couple of small marks on the back board. End papers are bright and clean, with the very faint odd spot to paste downs. Internally, firmly bound, with very slight wear between leaves pp.128-129. Pages are bright and clean, with slight browning towards the hinge of central leaves. Very Good. signed by author. book.
