Junto a los métodos ilustrados y los argumentos barrocos que presenta esta obra así como las referencias que el autor hace a Ambrosio de Morales en su obra "Las Antigüedades de la ciudades de España", podemos ratificar en este libro el conocimiento de Fray Fernando de Zevallos de los fundamentos renacentistas, que gracias a ellos estableció una nueva interpretación de la antigüedad con un planteamiento más erudito y filológico. La antigüedad representaba un signo de prestigio, en ocasiones con evidentes intereses inducidos, como ocurría en el campo de las sedes episcopales paleocristinas, y se convirtió en campo de erudición donde debía exponerse argumentos tanto a favor de las doctrinas religiosas y políticas generales, cuanto de los intereses de las comunidades locales. Será en este campo donde la historia ejercía su función educativa y es aquí donde el autor domina con maestría la pluma, para resaltar en este libro y teniendo como pretexto La Itálica la historia del Monasterio y de la comunidad jerónima con él vinculada.
