No obstante, otros caminos descubiertos en la investigación nos muestran con claridad que los propósitos formativos y la práctica son con frecuencia dos mundos diferentes. Si algo de nuevo sobresale en el periodo (2000-2017) es la inclinación hacia el uso metodologías de investigación tan diferenciadas como los problemas y objetos que se observan (investigación documental, fuentes orales, herramientas etnográficas y la perspectiva genealógica), apostándole a ver al maestro en el contexto y en la práctica de enseñanza, lo que ha hecho aparecer nuevas características que antes eran invisibles en el campo: el saber pedagógico de la historia escolar, las rutas pedagógicas de su enseñanza, la historia social de los barrios o el peso de la historia reciente en la enseñanza.
