Let's get one thing straight - and I've said this before - unless the book is a true first edition, any date printed in the book is not necessarily the date of publication of that particular printing. This book, a first American edition, has two dates on the copyright page: 1963 (the date the book was originally published in Germany), and 1965 (the copyright date of the English translation that was actually first published in the U.K. by Methuen early in 1966). This American edition is undated, so it wasn't necessarily published in 1965. In fact, this was published in 1968 (as confirmed by the date code on the dust jacket) so don't be fooled by all the listings giving 1965 as the date of this U.S. first edition. So, having said all that, let's look at the book! Translated from the German by Stella Humphries, it's a story about a poor country boy who goes to the big city in search of a better life. Lots of lessons here about loss and reunions, adversity and triumph, despair and joyfulness. Effective, two-color pictures on almost every spread. A fine copy in a very good dust jacket, with a closed tear at base of rear panel and a small worn area on front panel from removal of a label. Very attractive book. MC.
