The author provides a first hand account of his experiences, from crossing the Atlantic on an American packet ship to being thrown in jail for defending himself against his American persecutors. Along the way, he contends with rude republican winds, ill-mannered gulls, uncivil porpoises, and spiteful republican politicians. Through it all, the author humorously maintains his loyalty to the monarchy and his disdain for the 'vile republican' ways of those around him. This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the social and political differences between the United Kingdom and the United States in the early 19th century. By providing an insightful and entertaining account of the author's experiences, this text elucidates how America was perceived by English loyalists during its early years as an independent nation, and offers a fresh perspective on the development of Anglo-American relations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. First Edition. 12mo, ca. 4.5" x 7.5" bound in original or early cloth covered boards, heavy wear, backstrip piece lacking, covers still attached but quite loose, contents moderately foxed, pp. 216 including a few of adverts at back. A fair copy, but complete. This is a satirical work about European visitors to North America ca, 1825- 1832. Frances Trollope is specifically named in a satirical tone and there is a publisher's note mentioning other travelers of the period, whose work is generally critical of the United States. Mr. Fibbleton is listed as "ex- Barber to his Majesty"- to give him an aire of false supremacy, which often shows in the writings of other travellers of the period. Fun to read. Generally fair to poor condition, but scarce and worth adding to a collection of other travel narratives of the time to add a different perspective. The book is attributed Asa Greene or Matthew Franklin Whittier. Note: due to size and weight shipping outside the USA should cost about that of an average book.
