These essays give in honor of Wilhelm Worringer on his sixtieth birthday cover a wide range of topics, from a study of the iconography of the early Middle Ages to the landscapes of Jakob van Ruisadels to a philosophical study of Nietzsche. Wilhelm Worringer (1881--1965) was a German professor and scholar whose contribution to the study of art history cannot be overstated. His career took off immediately with the publication of his doctoral dissertation, in which he formulated a theory that justified abstract and expressionist art through a study of aesthetics. His theory was based on empathy; he suggested that aesthetics were determined by what a particular society found beautiful. Subsequent publications firmly maintained his reputation in the field.
