Henry Fielding (22 April 1707 8 October 1754) was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humour and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel Tom Jones. This eighteenth-century masterpiece presents a vivid panorama of Georgian society, satirizing its hypocrisies and moral complexities with sharp wit and keen observation. Fielding's narrative illustrates the journey of a young man navigating love, betrayal, and fortune, ultimately questioning the nature of virtue and vice. The novel's enduring appeal stems from its rich characterizations and its humorous yet incisive commentary on human nature. It remains a cornerstone of the literary canon, offering both entertainment and profound insight into the human condition. Hardback.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Publishers Slipcase. First published in 1749, this edition of Tom Jones has been Designed & Illustrated by T. M. Cleland for the Members of the Limited Editions Club. The text has been printed at the club's printing-office in new York, on an especially made Curtis paper, and the illustrations have been reproduced in Paris : the color-plates by Deberny and Peignot, the color printing by Lucien Delaporte. This is copy #253 of 1500 copies signed by the illustrator on the colophon page. Tom jones ( not the singer), belongs with those beneficent great novels that can be enjoyed quite as much as they are esteemed. The book is , indeed, so masculine, so solid, so engaging that, delighted as one is to talk it over with a friend, one shies off a little from assessing it as a critic. In a certain sense, one would as soon " assess" a good dinner. Books are both in very fine condition and in their somewhat wrinkled and quite tattered original tissue wrappers. The books are bound in gray cloth and have fine black and white paper labels. There is a price in pencil on the front paste down by a previous book seller, very easily removed. The original publisher's slipcase is near fine with two small tape repairs, and very mild shelf wear. A fine collectible, beautifully printed with very appropriate color illustrations. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. T. M. Cleland (illustratore). Signed by Illustrator(s).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. pp. 454, 448. 12mo. Lovely two volume set bound in full tan polished calf. This is a complete set in itself, issued as part of 'The Novelist's Library', edited by Thomas Roscoe, and with illustrations by George Cruikshank. Titles from the set are usually encountered bound in cloth: our offering is most attractively bound in full polished calf, with a heavily-ornamented spine showing five raised bands and morocco spine labels. A frontispiece and four engravings in volume I; and a frontispiece and three engravings in volume II. All edges are marbled, as are the endpapers. The binding shows minimal wear, and the hinges are strong. Occasional foxing to text, more so from off-setting of the plates. Else in very good condition. Roscoe (1791-1871) was an English author and translator. He was educated by Dr. W. Shepherd and a private tutor, and began his career writing for local magazines and journals. During the period 1820 to 1850, he wrote a number of travel books, and several novels. He also translated into English many Italian, German and French works. 'The Novelist's Library' was issued between 1831 and 1833, and contained complete works (in English) by Cervantes, Tobias Smollett, Laurence Sterne, Oliver Goldsmith, Henry Fielding, and Daniel De Foe. Cruikshank engravings (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good (Plus). No Jacket. Later Printing. London: C. Chapple, 1809. "Joseph Andrews" was Fielding's first full-length novel. He called it a "comic epic poem in prose" that we would classify today as picaresque, much like his model Cervantes. Written in 1742; this is a Very Good (Plus) set of a Later Printing. Two volumes bound with red cloth boards with brown leather spine and tips. Five raised bands; gilt titling and rules on the spine. This appears to be a 19th or early 20th-century rebind. Volume I has xxii (Preface and Contents), then a frontis illustration and 247 pages. Volume II has a frontis illustration, xi, and 244 pages. Following is a ten-page publisher's catalog that is mis-numbered as 5 to 14. One cannot but wonder what titles were on the first four pages! Both volumes are sound but rubbed at the margins; really a nice set that presents very well. Later Printing. Quarter-Bound. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.…
