Quatre volumes in-16 de 239, 236, 204 et 256 pages avec 9 charmantes gravures réparties dans les volumes. Très bon état intérieur. Charmantes reliures en veau vert foncé, filet doré sur les plats, dos lisse orné de paniers fleuris, carquois et vases de fleurs, pièces de titre et de tomaison rouges, filet perlé sur les coupes, roulette sur les chasses, tranches dorées. Dos légèrement passés et légères usures à certains motifs dorés. Mais l'ensemble est très agréable. Traduction française du roman anglais paru en 1749 narrant les aventures d'un héros "aventurier" dans la grande lignée des romans picaresques du XVIIe. Tom Jones est un bon jeune homme sans malice et toute sa vie illustre l'axiome cher au XVIIIe siècle à savoir que la simple franchise, la vraie bonté sont les précieux germes de toutes les vertus. Cependant Tom Jones n'est pas un petit saint ; la morale bourgeoise au temps de Fielding comme au temps de Defoë n'est encore en grande partie que façade. Il a maintes aventures ténébreuses, peu édifiantes, qui sont bien dans les moeurs de son siècle. …
