Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. TCollation (as in this copy): [par.]⁴ A-E⁴ F² G-M⁴ N² (complete). Pagination irregular and disjunct, as issued: [4], 20, 24, 29-44, 40-69, 100-101, 72-112 pp. Original title: The sacred doctrine of diuinitie, gathered out of the word of God… comprehended in two volumes… Anonymous on the title-page; now attributed to Sir Henry Finch. ESTC notes that most copies are anonymous; the British Library copy retains the dedication leaf to Thomas Egerton, Lord Ellesmere. Some copies show typographical variants in the headpiece; one Bodleian copy has a wrongly inserted Latin dedication leaf and an added errata leaf. Only one institutional copy recorded in the United States (Boston Public Library) and a small handful in the United Kingdom. Descrption The sacred doctrine of diuinitie, gathered out of the word of God is a remarkable and little-known monument of early Stuart systematic theology, presenting an ambitious attempt to organise the entire body of Reformed doctrine "according to the rules of art." Printed anonymously in 1613 by Felix Kyngston, the work offers a methodical exposition of Christian theology drawn directly from Scripture, combining scholastic structure with firmly Calvinist substance. The volume is conceived as the first part of a two-volume project. This opening book sets out the principles of sacred doctrine and includes an extended treatise on the Old Testament covenant of promise, laying the doctrinal foundations for a projected second volume devoted to fuller exposition and the refutation of heresies and errors. Though the second part was issued separately, the present volume stands as a self-contained theological system of considerable intellectual ambition. Long misattributed to Dudley Fenner, whose death is mentioned in the preface of the first edition, modern scholarship assigns the work to Sir Henry Finch, the distinguished jurist and learned lay theologian. Surviving copies are few, and institutional holdings are exceptionally sparse. Preserved here in a handsome early leather binding, this scarce quarto represents one of the earliest English attempts to construct a comprehensive Reformed "body of divinity" outside the universities and an important witness to the theological culture of Jacobean England. Sir Henry Finch was one of the most learned and influential English jurists of the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, and a remarkable example of the union of law, theology, and humanist scholarship. Educated at Oxford and Gray's Inn, he rose to become Reader at Gray's Inn and later a Justice of the Common Pleas. His legal treatise Nomotexnia became a classic of English jurisprudence. Alongside his legal career, Finch pursued serious theological study and composed The Sacred Doctrine of Divinitie as an ambitious system of Reformed theology. Though published anonymously, internal evidence and early attribution firmly connect the work to Finch, revealing a lay author deeply engaged with Calvinist orthodoxy and scholastic method. Finch's theology reflects the intellectual confidence of the Jacobean Reformation: Scripture as supreme authority, doctrine arranged by logical method, and heresy confronted by systematic exposition. His attempt to construct a full English "body of divinity" outside clerical authorship is highly unusual, and places him among the most learned lay theologians of his generation.…

Bar Association of New York stamp on title. Printed in Anglo-French (law French). Nomotexnia "consists of four books. The first" is devoted to "jurisprudence, and is mainly devoted to expounding the distinction between natural and 'positive' law. It is learnedly written, Plato and Cicero being frequently cited. The second book deals with the common law, customs, prerogative, and statute law; the third with procedure, and the fourth with special jurisdictions, e.g. those of the admiral and the bishop. As an exposition of the common law, Finch's Law, as it was called, was only superseded by Blackstone's 'Commentaries,' so far as it dealt with jurisprudence only by the great work of Austin. Aggiungi al carrelloLondon: Richard and Edward Atkins, 1678. A Systematic Landmark of the Common Law: The Ombersley Court Copy of Finch's Law (1678) Finch, Sir Henry [1558-1625]. Law, Or a Discourse Thereof, In Four Books. Written in French by Sir Hen. Finch Kt. His Majesties Serjeant at Law. And Done Into English by the Same Author. London: Printed by the Assignes of Richard and Edward Atkins Esq, 1678. Octavo (6-1/4" x 3-3/4"; 15.7 x 9.5 cm). [vi], 496, 499-506, [16] pp. Initial blank lacking, text complete. With an index and two-page publisher advertisement. Full contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands and traces of former lettering piece to spine, gilt tooling to board edges. Moderate rubbing to extremities, joints cracked but cords holding, chipping to spine ends, corners bumped and worn. Light toning to interior, light soiling in a few places. Armorial bookplate of "Lord Sandys", to front pastedown, hand-lettered author name to fore-edge of text block, small ink notation (shelfmark?) to rear pastedown. A good, crisp copy in its original state. $750. * Before Blackstone, there was Finch. Originally published in Law-French in 1613, this was the first successful attempt to organize the "chaos of cases" that defined the English common law into a logical, systematic arrangement. It remained the primary textbook for law students for over 150 years. As Holdsworth notes, it was the "pioneer book" of English legal institutes; its definitions and structure were so robust that Blackstone incorporated the majority of Finch's work into his own Commentaries. This copy hails from the celebrated library of Ombersley Court, amassed over centuries by the Sandys family. The bookplate belongs to Samuel Sandys (1695-1770), the 1st Baron Sandys and Chancellor of the Exchequer. A notable 17th-century feature is the hand-lettered author name on the fore-edge, a remnant of the era when books were shelved edges-out. A superior copy of a foundational text, linking the medieval legal tradition to the modern era. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:238. Aggiungi al carrelloA Scarce English-Language Edition of "The Best Elementary Book" Written Before Blackstone's Commentaries Finch, Sir Henry [1558-1625]. A Description of the Common Laws of England, According to the Rules of Art, Compared with the Prerogatives of the King. With the Substance and Effect of the Statutes (Disposed in their Proper Places) by Which the Common Law is Abridged, Enlarged, Or Any Ways Altered, From the Commencement of Magna Charta, Anno 9 H.3. Until this Day. Originally Written in French, And Now First Translated into English, With Variety of References to both the Ancient and Modern Reports, And Occasional Remarks where the Law has Been Altered by later Resolutions, Or Acts of Parliament, With Many Useful Observations also on Various Points of Law. London: Printed for A. Millar, In the Strand, 1759. [iv], viii, [4], 463, [1] pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, blind tooling along joints, raised bands and faint hand-lettered title in early hand to spine, blind tooling to board edges. Light rubbing and a few shallow scuffs to boards, chipping to spine ends, front board beginning to separate but secure, corners bumped and somewhat worn, rear hinge starting. Light toning to interior, offsetting to margins of endleaves. $1,500. * Only edition of this translation, the best version of this work. Originally published in Law-French in 1613 as Nomotechnia: Un Description del Common Leyes D'Angleterre, "Finch's Law, till the publication of Blackstone's Commentaries, was regarded as the best elementary book to be placed in the hands of the law students. It is one of the few attempts that have been made to reduce the common law into system. [Finch's] definitions were exact, his style concise and nervous, and his illustrations clear and authentic. Most of the valuable parts of Finch are incorporated in Blackstone's Commentaries" (Sweet & Maxwell). The statement "Now First Translated into English" in the title of our edition is misleading. The first translation, by the author, was published in 1627 with the title Law, Or, A Discourse Thereof. It went through several editions, the last one, issued by Henry Lintot, in 1759. Our edition was the work of an anonymous translator. It is superior because it is a fresh translation that includes material omitted in the a.…

Aggiungi al carrelloLondon, 1678. Later ed. (1st English is 1627). Exceptional Provenance: From the Library of Sir Frederick Pollock Finch, Sir Henry [1558-1625]. London: Printed by the assignes of Richard and Edward Atkins Esq, 1678. [vii], 496, 499-506, [16] pp. Complete. First leaf blank. With an index and two-page publisher advertisement. Octavo (6-1/4" x 3-3/4"; 15.9 x 9.5 cm). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands and blind fillets to spine, gilt rules to board edges. Worn, boards detached along with front free endpaper and leaves A1-3, some small scuffs, nicks and scratches to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, wear to spine ends and corners, which are bumped, early annotation (and ownership signature?) to rear free endpaper, its upper right corner lacking. Pollock/ Linc: Inn/ 1898") to verso of initial blank. Item housed in archival box. $750. * This 1678 edition of Sir Henry Finch's Law represents a rare physical intersection of legal history's greatest minds. It bears the ownership signature of Sir Frederick Pollock (1845-1937), the preeminent Victorian jurist whose work, much like Finch's, sought to transform the "chaos of cases" into a coherent scientific system. Pollock was the lifelong confidant and intellectual foil to Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Their celebrated correspondence, spanning nearly 60 years (1874-1932), is widely considered the most significant exchange in Anglo-American legal history. In their letters, they debated the very concepts found in this volume-negligence, contract theory, and the evolution of legal doctrine-effectively bridging the gap between the institutes of the 1600s and the pioneering Legal Realism of the 20th century. Before Sir William Blackstone's Commentaries redefined legal education, Finch's Law was the undisputed standard text. Described by Holdsworth as the "pioneer book" of English legal institutes, Finch provided the foundational definitions that Blackstone would later refine. Much of Finch's concise and authentic system was later incorporated into Blackstone's Co. London, 1678. Later ed. (1st English is 1627) (illustratore). …
