Hardcover. Condizione: New. Orderbook - wwb -----FIONA PARDINGTON: THE PRESSURE OF SUNLIGHT FALLING. Ed. By Kriselle Baker and Elizabeth Rankin. Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, 2011. Published in association with Two Rooms Gallery, Auckland, and Otago University Press, Dunedin. 160 pp. With 112 ills. (88 col. , 4 fold…out). 34 x 26 cm. ISBN 9781877578090 In English. Featuring a recent series of images by New Zealand photographer Pardington (b. 1961) that depict startingly lifelike 19th-century plaster heads cast from living Maori, other Pacific Islanders, family members and colleagues by Pierre-Marie Dumoutier (1797-1871) , a French artist-naturalist-phrenologist who accompanied explorer Dumont d'Urville on a voyage to the South Pacific from 1837 to 1840, this catalogue presents nine scholarly texts discussing the expedition's encounters with native peoples, the casts in light of the fledgling disciplines of ethnography, anthropology and phrenology, and the personal significance of the works for Pardington, who is of Maori-Scottish ancestry. Artist(s) : Pardington, Fiona; Dumoutier, Pierre-Marie Indexing: Western, Europe â" France, New Zealand â" 1800-1900, Post-2000 â" Photography, Sculpture â" Women Artists, Non-American Minority Artists Plans: 73,75,68 Worldwide Number: 075302Hardcover $120.00x (libraries receive a 10% discount on this title); *** FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request *** - *** IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy, brand new, pristine, never opened -- 160 pp. ; 112 illus -- with a bonus offer--; In the 18th and early 19th centuries, European explorers in the Pacific region faced a challenge: how to describe the peoples they met and how to report what they had seen and found. Thus, it was necessary that serious expeditions include artists and scientists in its ship's company. One ambitious journey of the 19th century was the third voyage of the French explorer Dumont d'Urville, from 1837 to 1840. It was just before the invention of photography, when phrenology, the study of people's skulls, was popular. On this South Pacific voyage, D'Urville chose to take an eminent phrenologist, Pierre-Marie Dumoutier, to make head lifecasts of the indigenous peoples they would encounter in order to preserve their likenesses. When the expedition returned to France, the casts were displayed, then later stored in the Musee de l'Homme in Paris. The collection was soon overtaken by photography and history. In 2007, photographer Fiona Pardington first learned of the lifecasts when a chance conversation initiated a four-year project. It took her from Auckland, New Zealand, to the Musee de l'Homme, as she researched and photographed more than 50 casts of Maori, Pacific, and European individuals, including casts of her Ngai Tahu ancestors. This rich and engaging book contains Pardington's photographs. These photographs are extraordinarily beautiful, evocative, and spiritually powerful images. They recover the likenesses and revive the life force of Dumoutier's indigenous subjects, eliciting our empathy and fascination with a world we can never really know. With essays by leading scholars in Pacific history, art, and photography, on subjects as diverse as phrenology, cast-making, the voyage, and the identity of the Maori casts, the book will appeal to anyone interested in 19th-century encounters between voyagers and the peoples of the Pacific, or contemporary art and photography.
