"I found myself entirely absorbed by the era, the history, the characters, the drama of this book. It's a fascinatng story told in an utterly compelling fashion. While reading it, I felt as if I were a part of the world of these people - which is at once frightening and exhilarating. Freud's Mistress is a wonderful, engaging, and bittersweet novel. I absolutely loved it." - Garth Stein, bestselling author. "In Freud's Mistress, Karen Mack and Jennifer Kaufman succeed where so many historical novels flounder: they weave an unexpected tale of human desire and the bonds of love, based firmly in the rich and relevant source material they've scoured for details of the daily lives of fin-de-siecle Vienese and - fascinatingly - the inner life of Dr. Sigmund Freud." - Lissa See, author. "It is almost impossible to pass up a novel inspired by Sigmund Freud's rumored affair with his sister-in-law. This is a story that will appeal to the Pleasure Principle of many a reader." - Whitney Otto, author. "If you want to understand the obsessive pull of the human heart, you could spend a lifetime on the couch, or you could read this dazzling novel. This is a book to savor." - Sheri Holman, author. "Book groups looking for a great selection? Look no more? This is Sigmund Freud like we've never known him. Insecure, passionate, even sexy. Who knew?" - Esmeralda Santiago, author. "His theories would change the world - and tear hers apart. In the vibrant, extravagant world of turn-of-the-century Vienna, Minna Bernays is an overeducated lady's companion with a sharp, wry wit. Unwilling to settle and marry, she has spent years working for frivolous, difficult women, stuck in a social limbo, neither servant nor master. When Minna is abruptly fired, she finds herself out on the street and out of options. In 1895, the city is aswirl with avant-garde artists and writers and revolutionary ideas, but a single woman's only hope for security is still marriage. In desperation, she turns to her sister, Martha, for help. But Martha has her own problems - six young children and an overworked, disinterested husband who happens to be the brilliant but imperious Sigmund Freud. At this time, Freud is a struggling professor, all but shunned by his peers and under attack for his theories, most of which center around sexual impulses. And while Martha is shocked and repulsed by her husband's "pornographic" work, her sister is fascinated by his startling discoveries. Minna is everything Martha is not - intellectually curious, engaging, and passionate. Minna and Freud embark on what is, at first, simply a meeting of the minds, but something deeper is brewing beneath the surface, an inevitable catastrophe that she cannot escape. In this sweeping tale of love, loyalty, and betrayal, fact and fiction meld seamlessly together. After years of research, Karen Mack and Jennifer Kaufman have constructed a compelling portrait of an unforgettable woman and he struggle to reconcile her love for her sister with her obsessive desire for her sister's husband, the mythic father of psychoanalysis." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition green boards, black cloth spine and pink spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quotes by Anne Sexton and Acknowledgments. "Now that she's conquered rehab and romance, best-selling novelist Carrie Fisher boldly goes where no man has gone before: motherhood. Hollywood screenwriter Cora Sharpe has taken to writing letters to the unborn child she's tentatively dubbed Esme - even though it sounds like a noise your nose makes. But then, Cora has what one of the endless intimates she thinks of as her Committee calls "a big loud life," and recent events have been no exception. Her confidant and writing partner, Bud, has been on a bipolar roller coaster. Her dear friend William, AIDS-ridden, has fiinally taken leave of his life, with the aplomb befitting "a suburban show business sultan." And in the vacuum that follows his departure, Cora's romance with quiet, gentle Ray has suddenly flickered and expired. Then Cora finds out she's pregnant, and even the Committee can't steer her through this one. In a fight-or-flight confrontation with maturity, flight seems to have the upper hand. So when her mother, Viv, tries to rally support for her latest madcap scheme - to kidnap her Alzheimer's-stricken father from a nursing home and take him back to Whitewright, Texas, the place of his birth - Cora, for once, is game. With Bud in tow, she signs on for what turns out to be a cosmic (not to mention comic) exploration of the urges that drive us to feather our nests and fill them, to flee them and find our way home. With singular deftness, Fisher captures the ambivalence and absurdity of modern maternity, in her wittiest and wisest novel to date." - from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Carrie Fisher has been a dictator in her teens, an actor in her twenties (The Star Wars trilogy, Hannah and Her Sisters, etc), a screenwriter and novelist in her thirties (Postcards from the Edge, Surrender the Pink). She anxiously anticipates whatever ghoulish incarnations await her. In the meantime, she and her daughter, Billie, divide their time between Beverly Hills and Florence, Italy" - from the inner rear jacket flap.
