Please contact us if you have a question about this title.Author: Philip Jones Format: Hardback Nu…mber of Pages: 304 For Philip Jones and his long term partner Barrie Reid, Heide renowned as the birthplace of Australian modern art was a place to call home for more than twenty-five years and John and Sunday Reed were like surrogate parents. Art + Life, his deeply personal account of post-war Melbourne at Heide, is in part a debt of gratitude and in part an effort to set the record straight, to separate the real people from the larger-than-life mythologised figures the Reeds have become in the annals of Australian art history. Philip Jones was there, in the midst of this high bohemian world where the boundaries between art, sexual experimentation, indulgence and talent were stretched. The Reeds and their peers were his circle of friends from the 1950s to the present day. He knew them all Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Joy Hester, Albert Tucker, Fred Williams, Charles Blackman, Hal Porter, Sumner Locke Elliott, Don Dunstan, Jim Cairns, the Moras, Max Harris and saw them at their best and worst. Never short of opinions, Philip Jones offers a candid account of a time where art and life coalesced into a revolutionary gesture flung into the face of a rigidly conventional, bigoted, if happily provincial, society'. The rebels in this narrative changed the way we live and think, by embracing the modern and scorning the parochial. Art + Life lays out the canvas of their lives in all its messy and sophisticated glory. Secondhand, Hardback.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB, in which 'deep professional commitment and mental toughness' are said to be qualities whose possession he demonstrated 'heroically'. Beatty's aggressive tactics at the Battle of Jutland are often contrasted with Jellicoe's more cautious approach. After the explosion of the Indefatigable and the Q…ueen Mary, with the loss of 1283 officers and men, he came out with the celebrated understatement, 'There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today'. The present item is in good condition, lightly aged, and laid down on a leaf removed from an autograph album. It is a 9.5 x 5 cm piece of paper, cut from the base of a form, with Beatty signing in red on the top line, and the following two lines written out by him in blue: 'David Beatty / Rear-Admiral / 21 June 1913.' Printed in small type at the foot: '[2726] 20002/P501 100 9/12va G & S 2032'. See image.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 12mo. With mourning border. In fair condition, aged and worn, with remains of white 'star' wafer mounts adhering to the four corners. Beneath the underlined heading 'Note for Secretary' reads: 'The relative positions of "Iris" & "Phoebe" do not appear to agree in papers marked (2) and (4) in…my letter. Please let me know which is right. / LB.' Presumably "Iris" and "Phoebe" were ships.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. See David Owen, who was minister for the navy when Begg was appointed Admiral of the Fleet in 1968, commented on his death that Begg was 'an Admiral with salt both in his ears and his tongue', who 'did not suffer fools gladly' (The Independent, 15 July 1995). 2pp, 4to. In good condition, lightly…aged. Folded once. Begins: 'Dear Mr Dean. / I have signed the photograph as you asked. / My appointments as Captain & Admiral have been.' A list of nine appointments follows, beginning with '1947-8 Commanding HM Gunnery School / Chatham.' and ending with '1963 - Commander in Chief / Far East.' Good bold signature and valediction: 'With all best wishes / Yours sincerely / Varyl Begg'. The letter can be dated from the letterhead and last item in the list.
