The antebellum period was a time of intensive American cultural production during which a genuine American national and cultural identity was produced. The American Revolution was the "natural" starting point for this process of cultural re-imagination. This book investigates the contribution of images about the American Revolution to the formation of an American historical and cultural memory. Visual representations of American Revolutionary figures and events in popular history paintings, lithographs, pictorial histories, and illustrated magazines from the 1830s to the 1850s have created a visual archive that was seminal in the Americans' establishment of a "usable past". Yet freedom of choice and the premium placed on private property also necessitated a counter force, a submission to authority, and pre-established patterns of behavior. And it led to a highly ambivalent notion of privacy, as an individual right situated between apparent opposites - private freedom and public order, liberalism and authoritarianism, (individual) autonomy and (communal) collectivity.'Cultures of Privacy - Paradigms, Transformations, Contestations' addresses the nation's struggles to harmonize these opposites, to reconcile the private and the public, both in a historical and comparative, transnational perspective. Individual contributions take issue with the staggering transformations of the public/private dichotomy, with the alleged erosion of privacy in the political arena, the "right to be let alone" in US legal culture, and the ambiguous hyperemphasis on the private in the media and in popular and literary culture (as in confessional blogs, social networks, and memoirs). The first of four thematic trajectories explores the historiographical narratives produced within and outside the borders of the U.S. The second deals with political and constitutional narratives on the American Revolution and how they were used during the Italian Risorgimento, the 'Vormärz' or the Revolution of 1848. The third trajectory is about the rejection of the American Revolution, about loyalists and conservatives in Europe and the Atlantic World. The fourth axis focuses on the relationship between visual/stage representations and cultural/historical memory. All contributions show how actors remember and as such construct the American Revolution by means of visual, textual, performative, and musical representations and how they connect their representations of this past event to their present-day collective experiences, claims and actions. 331 pp. Englisch.
