Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A fine start on a collection of various (and variant) editions of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, most being in no worse than Very Good condition, one in Good condition, some being Near Fine, with special issues and flaws noticed below. The subject and author of the dozen (12) tomes comprising the collection, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere in the 11th century from 1025-1050 A.D. His surname Khayyam means "tent-maker" in Persian. The bibliography consulted is Ambrose G. Potter, A Bibliography Of The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam Together With Kindred Matter In Prose And Verse Pertaining Thereto, published by Ingpen and Grant, London, 1929. The collection is comprised of the following: 1) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (London: Bernard Quaritch, 1872), measuring 218 x 163 mm. (8 5/5" x 6 1/2"). Third Edition. Original publisher's maroon cloth over boards, roan-backed spine. Wear on spine, scuffing to spine head and foot, wear to joints, darkening of edges of cover, but still nearly an excellent copy of interior, sturdy, attractive. sewn-in silk-linen bookmark. [iii], iv-xxiv [1], 1-36 pp.; 2) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1878), measuring 175 x 130 mm. (6 3/4" x 5"). This is the First published American Edition from the Third London Edition. One of 500 copies printed. Bound in publisher's original reddish-brown cloth over boards, with gilt and black titling and decoration. Bookplate of Church Periodical Club, thus ex-libris, but not ex-library. Dark burgundy endpapers front and rear. Red-stamped page-edges all round. The bibliographer Potter says that this is a variant binding. Minor defects in the form of slight scuffing to tips, spine head and foot, else Near Fine. [3], 4-77 [1] pp.; 3) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: L.C. Page and Company; London: Macmillan and Company, 1898), measuring 210 x 145 mm. (8 1/4" x 5 3/4"), an edition complete in two volumes. Edited by Nathan Haskell Dole. Multi-Variorum Edition. Bound in the original publisher's white cloth over boards, with red and gilt decoration, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, publisher's red oil-cloth dust jacket, quite fine, sturdy, substantial. Eight illustrations by multiple artists. This edition, "Edward Fitzgerald's Version," so-called for comparing "English, French, German, Italian, and Danish translations" to Fitzgerald's version. Dust jacket spines a bit sunned, otherwise a beautiful copy of the first trade edition of "the first extensive scientific edition," and thus itself a collectible. Volume I: clxxvii, [3], 3-203 pp.; Volume II consists wholly of appendixes, indexes, another nine fine illustrations; frontis matter, 210-655 pp.; 4) THE RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1900), measuring 210 x 153 mm. (8 1/4 x 6"). Translated by Edward FitzGerald, E.H. Whinfield, and Justin Huntly McCarthy. Bound in publisher's navy cloth with quite elaborate gilt decoration, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Fine Introduction by Jessie B. Rittenhouse. Owner's signature at endpaper in the form of a penciled gift notation. Spine rubbed, dulled slightly but still attractive, rear cover a bit grubby, slight dings to board fore-edges, else with a beautiful cloth decoration to front cover. Fine black-and-white engraving of FitzGerald at frontis, captioned and tissue-guarded. xl, 1-244 pp.; 5) BJERREGAARD, C.H.A., Translator. SUFI INTERPRETATIONS OF THE QUATRAINS OF OMAR KHAYYAM AND FITZGERALD. (New York: J.F. Taylor and Company, 1902), printed for them by the Tudor Press, measuring 306 x 240 mm. (12 1/2" x 9 3/8"). Bound most handsomely in the publisher's original gray paper over boards, fore- and tail-edges untrimmed. French-fold text. Spine lettering faded (as on all copies), scuffing to spine head and foot, otherwise clean, unmarked, bright, attractive of interior. Full-page plate at frontis, tissue-protected, with second title page, also with title vignette, with Preface.…

174 x 127 mm. (6 3/4 x 5"). 77, [2] leaves. Original brown cloth, upper cover with gilt title and floral sprig within a black frame, smooth spine with gilt lettering and flower. Front flyleaf with penciled inscription: "Prof. Wm. M. Sloane / with the affection of / Chas. Dudley Warner," dated July 7, 1881. Paas 2679. Only trivial imperfections--A VERY FINE COPY of a book extremely difficult to find this well preserved. This first edition of the Rubaiyat published in America, in FitzGerald's 101-verse third version, has a distinguished link with the U.S. literary scene of the late 19th century. The inscriber here, Charles Dudley Warner (1829-1900), was a major American literary figure, important in his time as an essayist, novelist, and friend of Mark Twain, with whom he co-authored the novel "The Gilded Age." Educator and historian William Milligan Sloane (1850-1928), to whom it is inscribed, was president of the American Historical Association as well as founder and chairman of the United States Olympic Committee (he escorted the American team to the first Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896). Because of their mutual interests, the paths of the two men must have crossed with some frequency; the final connection occurred when Sloane delivered Warner's memorial address before the American Social Science Association, of which Warner was president at the time his death. The speech emphasized Warner's accomplishment as both a journalist/editor and man of letters, his wide appeal and admiration, and his "profound" interest in social problems--a fact that made his presidency of the association so appropriate. FIRST PUBLISHED AMERICAN EDITION, from the Third London Edition.…

"Vedder's 'Rubáiyát' set the standard for the artist-designed book in America and England." In a Superb Early Twentieth Century Inlaid Binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe [BINDING]. SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE, binders. FITZGERALD, Edward, Translator and Editor. VEDDER, Elihu, Illustrator. KHAYYAM, Omar. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám The Astronomer Poet of Persia. Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald with an accompaniment of Drawings by Elihu Vedder. Boston: [Printed at the Riverside Press for] Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1894. Small quarto (8 1/4 x 6 inches; 209 x 152 mm.). 30 leaves, [1]-45, [2], [47]-61, [1, blank] pp., all printed on French-fold paper. With illustrated title, six pages of notes with decorative frames, frontispiece, and fifty plates illustrating the poem, inset with panels of text, all by Elihu Vedder. Elegantly bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe ca. 1910 (stamp-signed on front turn-in) in full blue crushed morocco elaborately gilt and inlaid. Covers with wide, heavily stippled gilt frame inlaid with twining grape vines in brown, green, and purple morocco, spine with five raised bands, gilt pointille with similar inlaid grape vine weaving through the length of the spine, lettered in gilt in compartments. Gilt ruled board edges and wide turn-ins of blue morocco enclosing red silk liners framed by ivory morocco that is inlaid with green and brown, the turn-ins featuring very large corner ornaments of inlaid green grape leaves, red watered silk endleaves, top edge gilt. Joints expertly and invisible repaired. Original black and gold printed gray wrappers designed by Vedder bound in. Engraved bookplate of renowned collector William F. Gable, of Altoona on verso of front endpaper. A fine, fresh copy in an absolutely spectacular binding from the great house of Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Tipped onto the front flyleaf is a one-page autograph letter signed by Elihu Vedder and written to a Boston gallery owner named Doll regarding paintings the artist has and will have for sale. It is dated December 16, 1868, a time when Vedder had returned to America from his home base in Rome to persuade the reluctant (and wealthy) parents of Carrie Rosenkrans to allow him to marry their daughter. Happily, Vedder and Rosenkrans were able to wed; they honeymooned in Italy, which they made their home for the remainder of their lives. A beautifully bound copy of an important illustrated edition of FitzGerald's lush and lilting translation of the celebrated 11th century classic collection of evocative short verses, tinged with a sense of the vanity of all things. A work that appealed strongly to Victorian sensibilities, the "Rubáiyát," first printed anonymously in 1859, became immensely popular and went through a great many editions. Sangorski & Sutcliffe created a number of splendid bindings for copies of the "Rubáiyát," most famously the "Great Omar" that was lost on the Titanic. Here, they have apparently taken inspiration from a quotation in the frontispiece: "Better be jocund with the fruitful Grape / Than sadden after none or bitter Fruit." According to the Smithsonian, which owns the original designs, "from the moment of its publication [in 1884], Elihu Vedder's 'Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam' achieved unparalleled success. Critics rushed to acclaim it as a masterwork of American art, and Vedder (1836-1923) as the master American artist. Vedder's 'Rubáiyát' set the standard for the artist-designed book in America and England." William F. Gable (1856-1921) founded the Gable's Department Store, in Altoona, PA, opening on March 1, 1884. The first incarnation of the store was a single room. In 1891, Gable built a Victorian Neoclassical style building, in downtown Altoona. It was in this building that the Gable's Department Store became the forerunner of the modern department store. By 1913, Gable's was the most complete department store in the state of Pennsylvania. It had come to be known as "the people's store." The renowned collection of the. …
