Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. This study points to the Civil War as the most significant event in American legal history. The basic principles of the postbellum legal order, believes the author, are so radically different from the Constitution of 1787 that they should be recognized as a second American Constitution, establishing a Second Republic. The first Constitution was based on the principles of peoplehood as a voluntary association, individual freedom, and a republican elitism. The guiding premises of the second Constitution - as articulated in Lincoln's visionary address at Gettysburg and enacted in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments - were in contrast, organic nationhood, equality of all persons, and popular democracy. Thus, although we may yearn for continuity with 1787, in fact our values, commitments, and aspirations for America have radically changed. By finally recognizing our radical discontinuity with the first Republic, says Fletcher, we can put an end to debilitating arguments about the Founders' intent and consciously and energetically pursue the full implications of our true beliefs about what America should and can become.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. This is an extended essay on the nature, value and meaning of loyalty. The author argues that loyalty is a central feature of our moral lives, and that relationships based on loyalty should be inviolable.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Minus. Reprint. This Literary Guild of America reprint edition was published in the same year as the 1st Edition. This copy is almost 100 years old, has been well taken care of and is in fine condition. Its construction is unlike most of the poorly made book club editions. The buckram covered boards, high quality paper and matching top stain add up to a handsome edition possibly as desirable and rare as the first edition. The text block is solid, clean and square. Pictorial endpapers are clear of markings with small previous owner's bookplate under front flap. Spine tight, boards rigid and tips pointed. Slight push to spine ends. There is no book club deboss on the rear cover. The jacket is in very good minus condition and has some closed tearing along backstrip seams and chipping/loss at spine ends and some edges. It looks sleek in a shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing.…
