He carried out extensive experimental investigations in human physiology and made several important discoveries. He assisted in establishing the glycogenic function of the liver; showed that one of the functions of the liver is to separate from the blood the cholesterin, which is a product of the nervous system. and which, becoming a constituent of the bile, is afterward converted into what he named "stercorin" (better known as coprosterol), the odorous principle of feces. 47 pp. 8vo, publisher's gilt-lettered and blind-embossed flexible cloth. First separate edition, reprinted, for private distribution, from the Transactions of the American Medical Association, 1852. Significant chipping to the cloth at the spine, but underlying structure sound; some light marginal dampstaining. The base of the stethoscope has repairs to cracks, but is otherwise in excellent (operable) condition. Presentation copy, inscribed for a doctor (but not signed) "with the Author's respects, Buffalo, April 16, 53." This book is accompanied by a 19th c. stethoscope and an old note on an Rx pad, "stethoscope used prior to 1855." The monaural ear trumpet is metal riveted to Vulcanite (?).
