This book, an assemblage of articles from a 1908 gathering of the Society of Antiquarians of France, explores the history and evolution of hot-air and gas-filled balloons. While tracing the development of early aviation, the author describes their cultural significance, from their use in scientific experiments to their role in public spectacles and their influence on the arts. The book features detailed descriptions, anecdotes, and rare prints and photographs of balloons and early flying machines, capturing the excitement and wonder that accompanied this remarkable period of innovation.
