The author, a fellow veteran who knew Bickerdyke personally, paints a vivid portrait of her life, from her childhood on an Ohio farm to her tireless work as an army nurse. Bickerdyke's compassion, strength, and unyielding dedication to the soldiers made her a beloved figure, and she earned the title "Mother" from those she cared for. The book delves into Bickerdyke's work in establishing sanitation and hygiene in military hospitals, her relentless battle with bureaucracy and corruption, and her unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of soldiers both during and after the war. While focusing on Bickerdyke's individual journey, the author also offers insightful commentary on the broader social and political contexts of the era, especially the fight against slavery and the struggle for equality. The book ultimately serves as a testament to the power of individual action, the importance of empathy, and the lasting impact of those who dedicate their lives to the betterment of others. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Prima edizione
Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo. A beautiful 1st Edition of this early biography of one of the most influential nurses in American history. "Mary Bickerdyke served in the Civil War from June 9, 1861, to March 20, 1865, working in a total of nineteen battles. Bickerdyke was described as a determined nurse who did not let anyone stand in the way of her duties. Her patients, the enlisted soldiers, referred to her as "Mother" Bickerdyke because of her caring nature. When a surgeon questioned her authority to take some action, she replied, "On the authority of Lord God Almighty, have you anything that outranks that?" In reality, her authority came from her reputation with the Sanitary Commission and her popularity with the enlisted men. "Also known as Mother Bickerdyke, was a hospital administrator for Union soldiers during the American Civil War and a lifelong advocate for veterans. She was responsible for establishing 300 field hospitals during the war and served as a lawyer assisting veterans and their families with obtaining pensions after the war." - wiki Blue cloth with titling in white. 176pp. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Little wear. Presents handsomely in a clear archival mylar dust jacket.
