Softcover. [3], 153 p.; line map of dioceses inside front wrapper; 21.5 cm. Committee incl. Clifford P. Morehouse, Powell Mills Dawley. 'The title of this book is Empty Shoes, a phrase used more than a century ago by William Carey, cobbler turned missionary, to describe his impression of India. "No shoes" might have been an even better title, since bare feet are the rule both indoors and out. .As a mark of courtesy Western visitors are usually allowed to keep their shoes on when entering a Christian church, but not when entering a Hindu temple. Empty Shoes might well be the symbol for a new nation emerging in great travail, ready to walk in the shoes of destiny, empty so long or walked in by others. Empty Shoes might also be the symbol of a new unity of God's Church formed to fit the restless, poverty-stricken millions of Asia, shod at long last "with the preparation of the gospel of peace."' (p. 9 f.) -- 'Empty Shoes has been prepared to enable people better to understand the Church of South India and to develop convictions about it. The book purposefully is laden with facts, with reports of conferences, and with a host of names and dates.' (p. 139) VG, sewn, in orig. black and green on white wrapper.

This book transports readers to a pivotal moment in history: the struggle for Korean independence from Japanese rule in the early 20th century. Through the lens of the First Korean Congress, held in 1919 at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the author masterfully captures the spirit of a nation yearning for freedom. The book examines the Korean people's deep-seated resentment towards Japanese oppression, highlighting their fight for self-determination and the establishment of a democratic republic. The author also delves into the international context, exploring the broader movement for self-determination that emerged from World War I, particularly in the context of President Wilson's calls for a League of Nations. The book underscores the importance of Christian ideals in the Korean struggle, showing how faith, education, and community played a vital role in resisting Japanese imperialism. Ultimately, this book offers a powerful and insightful look at the Korean people's fight for independence, a story that resonates with universal themes of freedom, justice, and human dignity.
