A FIRST EDITION, First Printing from 1936 (with the publisher's requisite "A" & appropriate dates), this hardcover book has black cloth-covered boards with a colorful paper pastedown to front cover, unfortunately damaged by water stain in the lower corner toward fore edge. Condition downgraded to Fair because light dampstaining is evident around all page edges, intruding about 1" all around. Front board a bid dented at fore edge as well. Front endpapers show paper residue from being stuck together & separated. Binding is secure, though front hinge is cracked. Lacks dust jacket. Blue cloth rubbed, spine and front board retain bright gilt stamped lettering, mild fraying at spine ends, cloth worn at lightly bumped board corners. Maroon top edge; some soiling and toning to fore-edge. Some splitting beginning at front hinge. Past owner's personal bookplate upon front pastedown with name obscured under a swath of black marker; name/address stamp on front free endpaper also obscured under black marker. Name/address stamps on half-title and title page without marker treatment. Blind stamp also on half-title along with Driscoll's warm six-line pencil inscription (to a different person than the aforementioned stamps): "For | Emil [?] - | one of the best guys | I know. | Charles B. Driscoll | 1943." A good copy.

Former owner's name on front pastedown; contents slightly musty with light tanning, crease to rear endsheet. A sailing memoir about the Slocum's single-handed global circumnavigation aboard the sloop Spray. The author was the first person to sail around the world alone. The book was an immediate success and highly influential in inspiring later travelers.
