Aggiungi al carrelloHardbound. Condizione: As New. New. Genetics is the area of biological study concerned with heredity and with the variations between organisms that result from it. It demands an understanding of numerous terms such as DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) a molecule in all cells that contains blueprints for genetic inheritance genes units of information about particular heritable traits which are made from DNA and chromosomes DNA containing bodies located in the cells of most living things that hold most of the organism's genes. The vocabulary of genetics goes far beyond these three terms as we shall see but these are the core concepts. Among the areas in which genetics is applied is forensic sciences or the application of science to matters of law specifically through DNA fingerprinting whereby samples of skin blood semen and other materials can be used to prove or disprove a suspect's innocence. Another fascinating application of genetics is the human genome project an effort whose goals include the location and identification of every gene in the human body. This dictionary includes a vast range of terms and concepts dealing with biochemistry cell and developmental biology immunology hereditary diseases and molecular evolution as well as advances in genomics and proteomics. 272 pp.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition hard back binding in publisher's original black cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Demonised by some but highly respected by others, Osman Digna was a Mahdist leader who remained a thorn in the side of the British in Sudan for almost two decades during the late Victorian period. He was, perhaps, the ablest commander of the Ansar, the Mahdist army, who, despite numerous defeats, refused to give up the jihad against the Anglo-Egyptian authorities. Although largely forgotten in the West today, he is remembered as a hero by many in Sudan. Contains frontispiece, (xxiv), 232 pp with a folding map and a folding pedigree. Foxing to the end papers and closed text block edges, spine slightly sun faded and in Very Good condition, no dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A. NORTH AFRICA [Sudan].

Likely early 18th century. Original engraving/etching at 4.5 x 3.75 inches. Fine impression with a bit of light soiling. Adhered at top corners easily removed to a larger hard stock paper. Illustrates Cupid with his bow and two romantic figures behind him to the right. A beautiful piece based on the original painting by Guido Reni in the 16th century which was lost and now only lives on through a few rare later engravings such as ours. A nice piece most suitable for framing.

Aggiungi al carrello1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. The recipient is not named, but the item derives from the papers of James Payn, the editor of the Cornhill Magazine, London. Gallenga begins: 'My dear Sir. | The last time I saw you - it may be 20 years ago - you were leaving London to write for Chambers in Edinburgh. I see the Journal now and then, and I often fancy I detected you.' He is 'almost sure' that Payn wrote 'the article quoting Miss Mitford's letters' and challenges him: 'If I am right, say so.' He continues: 'And if you ever are in London, let me see you, here at the Athenaeum, at my house, or wherever you like. We need all of us, at times, to see old friends. Since I saw you I have got on well in the world.' In 1854, through Cavour's influence, Gallenga had been elected a deputy to the Italian parliament, retaining his seat until 1864. He passed the summer in England and fulfilled his parliamentary duties at Turin in the winter. His employment as a Times correspondent begain during the Austro-Sardinian War of 1859, and continued for twenty years. In 1876, along with Edwin Pears, he was the first to reveal to the British public the Turkish atrocities in Bulgaria.

Oblong quarto. (8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches). 39 pen and ink wash drawings over graphite, with black ink borders, each mounted recto and verso onto the first twenty guarded cards, the drawings each approximately 4 x 5 1/2 inches, with ink manuscript captions in the artist's hand. Two of the drawings, numbers 36 and 37, use sepia wash. Many of the captions provide years for the events depicted. 22 blank cards complete the album. Nineteenth-century pebble-grained navy morocco paneled and tooled in gilt and blind, gilt-titling on upper board, with owner's monogram "W. F. H." in gilt on bottom board, four raised bands forming five richly gilt compartments on spine, gilt Greek key design running on board edges, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, with color-printed floral-patterned endpapers, binder's ticket of "E. Andersen / Roma / Legatore di Libri" on front free endpaper Charming album of 39 original ink wash drawings of iconic episodes in Napoleon's life, captioned by hand, in an extraordinary 19th-century fine binding. A dynamic album of memorable original drawings chronicling Napoleon's life, with an emphasis on his Italian campaigns. The lively drawings are united in their style and graphic weight, with interesting variations in the fluidity of line and the level of detail. Napoleonic events depicted herein include sieges and battles (Mantua, Lodi, Trebbia, Marengo); the signing of treaties (Campo Formio, Tolentino); the deaths of generals (Duphot, Joubert); and the royalist attempt to assassinate Napoleon with a "macchina infernale." Later scenes include the battles of Wagram, Ligny, and the catastrophic Waterloo, as well as Napoleon's final exile to St. Helena. An early bookseller's note on a preliminary blank identifies the 39 drawings present here as the work of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), which, though false, is not as laughable as it first appears. Though known for his finely rendered dramatic realism in oils, David's more casual sketches share more than a little resemblance to those in the present album. (See David's "View of the Campidoglio in Rome" at the Met.) The unknown Italian artist behind these Napoleonic tableaux was clearly a follower of David, and inspired by the grand mode of neoclassical French history painting: "Fine della giornata di Marengo," the 19th drawing in the album, expands a detail of a battle scene by Carle Vernet (1758-1836), and "Napoleone all' Isola de Lobau," the first drawing, echoes a painting by Charles Meynier (1768-1832). The 39 drawings were neatly mounted in the present album by E. Andersen, a Roman bindery active in the 1800s, known for producing lavish gift books for travelers on the Grand Tour. Interestingly, the person who originally commissioned the album, presumably the "W. F. H." of the bottom board's monogram, did not choose to have the scenes arranged chronologically. The viewer is hurtled from 1813 to 1797 to 1800 and back again, abruptly following Napoleon from Alexandria to Waterloo to Paris to Saint Helena, on battlefields and in council chambers, as if his life were flying by one's eyes. The drawings are captioned as follows: 1. Napoleone all' Isola di Lobau. 2. Morte del Duca de Montebello. 3. Battaglia di Wagram, 1809. 4. Resa di Montova, 1796. 5. Provera prigioniero, 1796. 6. Amling' + [6] + 39 pages text + 14 folding engraved plates with 68 illustrations. Typographical ornaments. Contemporary half vellum. Enlarged edition, corrected by the author (first published 1664), of this influential German treatise on late baroque military architecture by the Bavarian engineer Heidemann, a follower of Daniel Speckle (1536-89) of Strassburg, one of the first exponents of modern fortification. Heidemann still considered the use of orillons for the protection of the flanks of bastions as essential, a method largely abandoned by that time under the influence of the Dutch systems of fortification. A re-interpretation of his theories was offered by Sturm in his Architectura Militaris hypoth.-eclectico (1702). The beautiful allegorical title by the Bavarian court engraver Carl Gustav von Amling (1651-1702) incorporates a view of Munich in the background. A very fresh copy of this handsome book printed on good quality paper. Jähns 1343; Jordan 1636.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. Stuart was at the time actor-manager of the Adelphi Theatre, London. Both items in good condition, lightly aged, and folded for postage. ONE: 3pp, 12mo (the third page carrying a postscript written lengthwise). Bifolium. Begins: 'Dear Sir / I have a new play which I should like to read to you if you would care to hear it. It is not suited to a big house & stage like the Adelphi but if you are likely to put anything up a smaller house (as in the case of Peter's Mother) it might be worth your while to consider it.' He explains that the play contains a 'big part' for Ellen Terry's sister Marion Terry (1852-1930), who would be 'almost indispensable' for the play's 'satisfactory presentation'. He gives a day when he will be in London, before going 'North to look after rehearsals of The Return of the Prodigal'. Alternatively, he will be lunching at the Savile Club the following day, 'if you care to ring me up on the telephone'. The play in question is presumably 'The Cassilis Engagement', which was produced at the Imperial Theatre, London, from 10 February 1907. The part of Mrs Cassilis was not taken by Marion Terry, but by Evelyn Weeden. TWO: 1p, 12mo. Written a little over a year before he killed himself in a fit of depression (Bernard Shaw described his death as 'a public calamity'), in similar fashion to Virginia Woolf. Addressed to 'Otho Stuart Esq.' and signed 'St John Hankin'. Reads: 'You have, I think, the script of a play of mine The Two Mr Wetherbys. If you have finished with it will you be good enough to return it to me here?'.
