Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. First Edition. Tall quarto. Two volumes in one. 208 pages; 208 pages. Period paper covered boards with leather corner tips and leather spine. Covers are edge worn and boards are scuffed. At some point the front cover was glued back to the binding. Leather spine and corners are rubbed and scuffed. Text has moderate to heavy toning and foxing. In volume 2 issue number 23 is misprinted. Instead of Vol. I, June 5, 1824 it should be Vol. II December 4, 1824. The issue number is correct as well as the page numbering. Hinges and text block are sturdy. Fair. Two volumes all that were issued for this short lived literary journal. The editor mentions in the first issue that the magazine would continue publication "should a sufficient patronage prolong the existence of this paper beyond the present number, it will be regarded by its conductors, as a proof of the revival of a literary taste by supplying it with such ailment as may strengthen the minds, after having amused the leisure of the readers." There was enough support for John Foote to continue printing this publication for the year. However by December, 1824 the journal had not grown enough to continue its publication. The editor writes, ".Not choosing, however, to continue figuring in so limited a circle, we have concluded no longer passively to await 'the coming of time' for increase of our acquaintance; and must accordingly, make free to assure our gentle readers that unless at least another 'Company' is added to our existing Battalion of subscribers, they must acquiesce to the necessity of parting with year and the Gazette together." Contents cover book reviews, history, current political news, literature, foreign news, essays, moral tales, letters from the west, correspondence, mathematics, natural philosophy, natural history, grammar, ancient history, biography, science, botany, and more. Several articles about Native Americans are included. The first article is a review of John Hunter's "Manners and Customs of the Indian Tribes located West of the Mississippi." Multiple articles cover the Indians in Texas. A list of Comanche words are found on pages 3 and 4 volume 2. One article covers the Cherokee Indians in Georgia. The October 9 issue features a front page article on Tecumseh.
