Jacomb Hood throughout, including frontispiece. Scarce, OCLC reporting only 2 copies worldwide (2024). A FIRST EDITION from 1890 (unknown printing), this small 12mo (5" x 7") has bright blue cloth-covered boards stamped with an intricate image & lettering in black to front & spine. Condition is VG: very clean & bright, with significant bumping to all corners & spine tips, no cloth loss. Former owner's name & "1894" date in pencil inside front cover, else, pages lightly tanned & completely unmarked aside from some offsetting/foxing in Appendix & atop a few other pages (photo 3). Original dark blue pictorial cloth, front and spine panels stamped elaborately in gold, all edges gilt. Illustrated with numerous woodcuts, including eight full-page ones, by H. J. Ford and G. P. Jacomb Hood. Early ownership signature on front free endpaper. Light wear to spine ends and corner tips, otherwise a nearly fine copy of this handsome and important book. WorldCat records just one holding for this edition (at LSU). #3738. $450. The text of this book needs little comment. It was the first in the series of Lang's "color" fairy books, which since then have almost never been out of print and which were instrumental in acquainting Anglophone readers with fairy tale motifs. In doing so they helped seed the ground for the rich growth of fantastic literature in the 20the century, extending into the 21st. The 37 stories in this collection were translated by a half-dozen or so writers from a variety of sources, acknowledged haphazardly in the editor's preface. The illustrations are mostly the same as those in the Longmans edition. The bibliographic status of this present item, however, is another story. Clues are not lacking but stringing them together into a coherent hypothesis still leaves us with puzzles. My provisional designation of the present work as the first U.S. trade edition rests on a less-than-ideal foundation of fact, historical precedent, probability and speculation.
