This is monograph no. 19 in this attractive series of books published in the 1940's. The series featured well known American artists such as Charles Burchfield, Rockwell Kent and Thomas Hart Benton. As well as artists lesser known today such as Waldo Pierce, Doris Lee, Alexander Brook and Eugene Speicher. I believe there were 20 monographs in the series and I have most of these listed. Kitaj (1932-2007) and his second wife Sandra Fisher were friends of Raphael Soyer and also the subject of at least 1 double portrait painted by Soyer. In 2 places in the catalogue Soyer has penned a critique of the color reproduction of his work.
