Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. Cover by Danial Brown (illustratore). 2nd Edition. We were sold this book by an online seller who listed it as "signed by author." As we knew Irwin Schiff and own several books signed by him, however, we immediately recognized the bold, felt-tip signature to title page here is NOT that of author Irwin Schiff, but rather that of Irwin Schiff's son, stockbroker and financial commentator Peter Schiff, long known for advising his clients to diversify out of investments denominated in inflation-prone U.S. dollars. (Yes, it would have been helpful had Peter inscribed "In my father's absence . . ." or something of the sort, but this one is "name only.") This is a 2000 paperback reprinting of Schiff's book, originally published in hardcover by Arlington House in 1976. Prophetically, Schiff wrote to warn that federal taxes and regulation must inevitably undermine America's industrial base. Even earlier, in the 1960s, Schiff had warned that divorcing the U.S. dollar from any linkage to gold or silver (the final step being elimination of the "Reserve Requirement") would result in massive inflation, which is in effect a draconian, regressive tax on the savings of the poor and middle class. Testifying before Congress, Sen. William Proxmire, Treasury Secretary Henry Fowler, and Federal Reserve Chairman William McChesney Martin assured the public none of that would happen. Those contrary claims and predictions, Schiff notes in his introduction to this Year 2000 printing, "have proven to be blatant nonsense." In October of 2015, Irwin Schiff died in federal prison at the age of 87, of a cancer contracted there and not optimally treated, having been jailed for exercising his First Amendment rights on the illegal and unconstitutional manner in which the IRS enforces the "federal income tax," and on the federal government's Social Security scheme (which author Schiff dubbed "The World's Biggest Chain Letter,") without ever being allowed by the federal courts to substantially present his findings to a jury -- citing chapter and verse of their own law and the relevant Supreme Court rulings -- or to confront and cross-examine agents of the Treasury, the "IRS" or the Social Security Administration (his accusers) at length on their claims for the lawfulness and constitutionality of their current collection and enforcement regimes (since of course such a defendant can't be allowed to present a substantive defense over the course of several days, lest the courtroom be "turned into a circus" -- a week of federal judge Kent Dawson's handsomely compensated time being far more valuable than 20 years of the defendant's.) Copies signed by either author Schiff or his son are uncommon. 368 pp. including Index, here reduced from $95.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. A very good copy of the hard cover edition in a like (not price-clipped) dust-jacket. Save for three lines highlighted on the first page of the preface, the text is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the binding and jacket are still rather bright and fresh in appearance, with minor wear and fraying at the extremities of the jacket. A sharp copy.

13.25 x 9.5 inches. 248 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original white wrappers. First edition. "The attacks of September 11, 2001 were among the most pictured disasters in history, yet they remain, a decade later, underrepresented in cultural discourse--particularly within the realm of contemporary art. Responding to these conditions, MoMA PS1 curator Peter Eleey brings together more than 70 works by 41 artists--many made prior to 9/11--to explore the attacks' enduring resonance. Eschewing both images of the event itself and art made directly in response, the exhibition and its accompanying catalogue provide a subjective framework within which to reflect upon the attacks and their aftermath, and explore the ways that they have altered how we see and experience the world in their wake. Opening on the tenth anniversary of the attacks, September 11 includes works by Diane Arbus, John Chamberlain, Bruce Conner, Christo, Ellsworth Kelly, Mary Lucier, Stephen Vitiello and others" (the publisher). A near-fine copy.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Signed and inscribed on the first front end paper ( 'To Mr. H.E. Spitsbergen, with compliments of Spencer Heath'). You can see the covers in the photos. The front cover has a few small areas of color fading. The gilt design on the front is very bright, same goes for the gilt lettering on the spine. The edges and corners look very good. The page edges are clean. The book is square (the spine is straight) and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. There are no binding issues. The pages are exceptionally clean. In scrolling through I didn't see any instances of soiling. There is a uniform toning at the margins. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing. There's a three page fold-out titled Hypothetical Distribution Of National Income which is in excellent condition. There is a tiny little bookseller stamp (Bell's Books, Palo Alto) off the bottom edge of the rear inside cover. Off the bottom edge of the front inside cover there is a tiny bookseller label. There are no other markings or attachments to be found anywhere in the book. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. 'A welcome exposition of fundamental, hard-hitting libertarian principle'---The National Review 'It is impossible to express my delight. This is the book I have been wanting, waiting for, indeed weakly yelling in print for: an empirical, scientific approach to 'social science'. I am happier than larks ever were, now that it is written.'-- Rose Wilder Lane 'A book of the first importance. An outstanding contribution to a crucial problem of our time.'-- Roscoe Pound, Dean Emeritus Harvard Law School. 'Spencer Heath was an American engineer, attorney, inventor, manufacturer, horticulturalist, poet, philosopher of science and social thinker. A dissenter from Georgist economic views, he pioneered the theory of proprietary governance and community in his book Citadel, Market and Altar. His grandson, Spencer Heath MacCallum, popularized and expounded on his ideas, most notably in his book The Art of Community.'. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Signed and inscribed on the first front end paper to the former Assistant Secretary Of War and US High Commissioner to Postwar Germany, John J. McCloy. The inscription reads 'To Mr. John J. McCloy, With the very high compliments of Spencer Heath, November, 1957' ). You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are quite clean. The gilt design on the front is very bright, same goes for the gilt lettering on the spine. The edges and corners are in excellent shape, no rubbing on the edges, one speck-sized spot of rub-through on the inside front covers bottom corner. The page edges are clean. The book is square and the spine looks pretty straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The text pages are exceptionally clean. In scrolling through I didn't see any instances of soiling. There is some light spotting just off the top edges of the front inside cover and facing signed front end paper. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases. On a dozen or so consecutive pages there is a very light and tiny crease just below the tips of their top corners. There's a three page fold-out titled Hypothetical Distribution Of National Income which is in excellent condition. There are no markings or attachments to be found anywhere in the book. And there is no writing other than the author's signed inscription. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It is in decent enough shape, though it has several flaws accounting for my only Good Minus rating. It looks pretty clean, though there is toning in a few places. The flaws are: the small loss off the top edge of the spine, the chip and small tear off the top edge of the rear, a thin tear off the top edge at the juncture between the rear cover and rear flap, a tiny tear off the top edge of the rear flap, and some erosion of the paper off the top and middle edge of the rear cover including two tiny holes. The flaps are in solid condition, toning off the top edges. The jacket is NOT priced-clipped, not clipped at all. I have it in a fitted protective cover.
