Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. First Printing. 359 Pages. A tight straight book with a light crease in the front cover. Otherwise a book with flawless text pages. This novel is based on the life story of a black woman living in South Africa. Only her name Poppie Rachel Nongena is invented. The book is the story of a humble black woman who under the burden of South Africa's laws never gives up. The heroic nature of Poppie Nongena and the skill of the author make it an epic. No book like it has ever been written before. The most hated laws in South Africa are known as the pass laws that were enacted to control the movement of African people. When the Afrikaners and the British conquered the whole of the country, they set aside land for the conquered people. These were lands now known as Homelands but in fact they are not homelands at all. They are 13% of the land area and are set aside for 70% of the population. Even though many of these people live now in the white cities, the Homelands are overcrowded, and in many parts eroded and barren. Many of their men are away in the cities of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, the places where black men can sell their labour. They are South Africa's migrant labourers, and they can be sent back to the Homelands any time it suits the authorities. The fact is the man's labour is wanted in the industries of the cities, but his wife and children are not. They are left behind in the Homelands and only have money if their husband and father is faithful. Sometimes because the man and his wife and children long for one another the wife breaks the law and goes to visit the husband in the city. This is the story of Poppie Nongena when she marries a migrant worker her whole life changes. In 1976 the black children rise up in rebellion and burn schools and stone cars and this story is told in the chapter titled the Revolt of the Children. The book is the story of a very courageous woman and her struggle to live under the cruelty of the law.

Dust jacket is now enclosed in protective covering. Body text and binding are still very good. Richard Lane was one of three brothers who founded Penguin Books in 1935. After sailing to Adelaide in 1922, Richard began work as a boy migrant - a farm apprentice living in rural South Australia as part of the 'Barwell Boys' scheme. Richard's diaries capture his life vividly and his loves; the characters he met; the land he worked; the families he depended on; and his coming of age in a new land. A remarkable social record and one of the best first-hand accounts of the child migrant experience, the diaries also capture the ideas and the entrepreneurship that led to the founding of the twentieth century's most famous publishing house.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (First Published 1953). 71 (unless I miscounted) Figures and Diagrams (Illustrations). You can see in the photographs just how terrific the covers of this nearly 64-year-old book look. They are a very nice red color. There isn't any soiling. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright and unworn. The unseen edges also show no wear at all. The only imperfections are 1) two smooth scratches on the front that can be seen or not seen depending upon how the light hits the book, and 2) a crease at the bottom of the front just above the right corner. That crease is limited to the cover, doesn't affect any of the interior. The actual four corners of the book also show no wear. The book is well bound, there aren't any tears 's to be found, no page is loose. The pages are also exceptionally clean, no stains anywhere. No spotting. There aren't any markings in the book. No attachments. I didn't see any creases or dogeared corners. The next to last page of the index has a little bit of crinkling in the middle, absolutely not affecting one's ability to read. The last page of the index is a little too tightly bound to the rear end paper, causing a little bit of crinkling between the two, but again absolutely not affecting the ability to read the print. Not too many dust jackets look this good after so many years. Take a look at the first three photographs. There is only tiny bit of edge wear, the top spine end has a wrinkle. The dust jacket has the same crease that the book has right above the front bottom right-hand corner. There's a speck of loss at the rear bottom edge adjacent to the middle edge (third photo). The jacket is quite clean, just a light amount of handling soiling. The flaps are in excellent shape. The bottom of the front flap is clipped. However the price is at the bottom of the rear flap which is not clipped. Next to the clipped area there is an Associated Book Publishers Ltd price sticker with a price in pounds. The dust jacket will be fitted with a protective cover. This is by far the least expensive of the copies of this book for sale that are in decent or better condition.
