Austin Steward (1793-1869) was an African American abolitionist and author of Twenty-Two Years a Slave, first published in 1857. Steward was born a slave, but escaped around the age of 21. He settled in Rochester, NY, then later moved to Wilberforce Colony in Canada to aid newly freed slaves. His memoirs found a receptive audience in the North before the onset of the Civil War. This copy is inscribed in another hand, with the following inscription: "Presented to Geo O. Milhouse / ___ of Providence Prep. / with the compliments of the author / May 1, 1879." Signed by P.T. Barnum in the author's hand below the inscription. The first edition of Struggles and Triumphs was published by J.B. Burr & Company of Hartford in 1869. Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) was an American entertainer, businessman, and politician best known for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. A master of publicity and spectacle, he popularized hoaxes, curiosities, and grand exhibitions, including the promotion of General Tom Thumb and the Swedish singer Jenny Lind. Barnum also served as mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut. He authored several books, including The Life of P.T. Barnum, Written by Himself (1855), an autobiography detailing his experiences, Struggles and Triumphs: Forty Years' Recollections of P.T. Barnum (1869), and The Art of Money Getting (1880), offering business advice. His legacy remains influential in entertainment and marketing. General John McAllister Schofield (1831-1906) was a distinguished Union Army officer during the American Civil War, and the 28th United States Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant. During the Civil War, he served under William T. Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign. As Sherman began his March to the Sea, Schofield went north and commanded the Army of the Ohio during the Battle of Franklin, earning recognition for his tactical restraint and contributions to the Union victory. His service was later honored with the Medal of Honor in 1892 for his actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek. Signed first edition of Forty-Six Years in the Army by John M. Schofield.
