From the Middle Ages to today, it has signified refuge and protection, as well as sacred ground. But in an era of increasing global migration and rising nationalism, the right to safe haven is under threat: racial, ethnic, national, and cultural differences have become seemingly intractable divisions, prompting us to insulate and isolate ourselves to mistrust the "other" and succumb to misdirected fear. In this climate, the need for compassion is greater than ever. In response to the shifting sense of safety and perceived loss of sacred space around the world, we invited 36 contemporary artists from 21 countries to reflect on ideas of sanctuary and create designs for four-by-six-foot wool rugs, woven by hand in Lahore, Pakistan.
