Il s'agit de l'édition commerciale de la thèse de doctorat en médecine de l'auteur, inspirée par Lacassagne ; elle fait partie de la collection "Documents de criminologie et de me?decine le?gale". Il s'agit donc du seul des trois ouvrages pionniers à avoir été rédigé par un médecin. Cette monographie anticipe l'ouvrage célèbre que Le Bon fera paraître trois ans plus tard. Henry Fournial (1866-1932) entra à l'Ecole du Service de Santé Militaire de Lyon et soutint en 1892 cette thèse sur la psychologie des foules. Il exerça la médecine militaire en grande partie outre-mer (Madagascar, Afrique du Nord) puis devint Médecin-Inspecteur Général.
