Le roman retrace l'histoire d'Augustin Meaulnes, racontee par son ancien camarade de classe, Francois Seurel, devenu son ami. Francois Seurel et Augustin Meaulnes sont tous deux ecoliers dans un petit village de Sologne pres de Vierzon. Lors d'une escapade, Augustin Meaulnes arrive par hasard dans un domaine mysterieux ou se deroule une fete etrange et poetique, pleine d'enfants. Le chateau est bruissant de jeux, de danses et de mascarades. Meaulnes apprend que cette fete est donnee a l'occasion des noces de Frantz de Galais. Parmi les festivites, des promenades en barque sur un lac sont offertes aux convives; Meaulnes y rencontre une jeune fille dont il tombe instantanement amoureux. Il ne fait cependant que la croiser et n'a plus l'occasion de la revoir. La fiancee tant attendue s'est enfuie, le mariage n'a finalement pas lieu et la fete prend tristement fin.Revenu a sa vie d'ecolier, Meaulnes n'a plus qu'une idee en tete: retrouver le domaine mysterieux et la jeune femme qu'il aime. Ses recherches restent infructueuses. Il s'en va etudier a Paris. C'est par hasard que son ami Seurel, devenu instituteur, retrouve la piste de la jeune dame, Yvonne de Galais, la soeur de Frantz, dont le Grand Meaulnes est toujours amoureux.
