Jahrhundert gehört er zu den herausragenden Bildmotiven der Landschaftsmalerei. Den künstlerischen Höhepunkt bilden Oybin-Darstellungen von Malern der Romantik, unter ihnen Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus und Carl Blechen. Delikat abgebildet und ins Universelle überhöht, machten sie den Oybin überregional bekannt und schrieben ihn dem Bildgedächtnis der deutschen Romantik ein. Vom Beginn des 18. bis weit ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein stellten ihn darüber hinaus zahlreiche weitere Maler, Zeichner und Grafiker auf vielfältige Weise dar. Ausgehend von den reichen, zum größten Teil noch nicht publizierten Kunstbeständen der Städtischen Museen Zittau umfasst der Band somit Werke des Barock und Spätbarock, der Empfindsamkeit, der Romantik und einer impressionistisch beeinflussten Freilichtmalerei.
