Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. --> This item is from the collection of Ira Gitler, influential jazz critic and historian. Mr. Gitler's criticism appeared regularly in publications like DownBeat and JazzTimes. He wrote two books about bebop. He wrote several books on jazz including multiple editions of The Encyclopedia of Jazz. Along with Leonard Feather and Nat Hentoff, Ira Gitler was among the most prodigious writers of liner notes, annotating more than 700 albums. In 2017, he was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). "The Ballad of the Sad Young Men and other Verse" by Fran Landesman is a vintage poetry book that is a limited signed first edition, which is also inscribed and signed on the title page as shown in photos. The inscription is dedicated to the NEA award-winning jazz writer (and lyricist) Ira Gitler. This book was published by Polytantric Press in the United Kingdom in 1975. Fran Landesman (1927-2011) was an American lyricist and poet, known for her witty and insightful observations on life, love, and the human condition. Her writing often explored themes of disillusionment, longing, and the complexities of relationships, frequently with a touch of cynicism and dark humor. She gained widespread recognition for her song lyrics, particularly "Spring Can Really Hang You up the Most," which became a jazz standard recorded by artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, and Miles Davis. She also penned lyrics for "The Ballad of the Sad Young Men" and collaborated with various musicians, including Tommy Wolf, Bob Dorough, and Simon Wallace. In the 1970s, she began publishing volumes of her poetry, such as "Invade My Privacy" and "Scars and Stripes," and performed her work publicly in various venues. Her husband, Jay Landesman (1919-2011), was a key figure in the Beat Generation, although perhaps less widely known than some of its more famous members. Born in St. Louis, he became immersed in the arts scene, notably by founding the influential magazine Neurotica in 1948. This quarterly journal served as an important platform for emerging Beat writers and cultural critics, publishing works by figures like Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. Neurotica challenged societal norms and explored the "neurotic perspective" of the post-war era. Jay Landesman also established the Crystal Palace, a renowned cabaret venue in St. Louis, which hosted a diverse range of performers including Lenny Bruce, Barbra Streisand, and Woody Allen. His autobiographical novel, The Nervous Set, about the hipster scene, was later adapted into a Broadway musical with lyrics by Fran, satirizing both the Beat lifestyle and conventional society. In 1964, the Landesmans moved to London, where Jay continued to engage with the arts, publishing memoirs and establishing Polytantric Press, which reprinted influential works and published new ones. Their home in London became a hub for artists and bohemians, known for its lively "open house" gatherings. Comes from a smoke-free, pet-free environment. Every item is hand-packed and handled with care. Please check out our other listings at tigervintagenj.
