Paris 2012. 1 Volume/1.

Dust Jacket Included. Good. Light coating of varnish provides a beautiful patina. Size 23.75 x 38 Inches. This is Lucien Boucher's iconic c. 1950 double hemisphere celestial map drawn to promote Air France, here in a scarce large format edition. Boucher's work for Air France is considered an embodiment of the golden age of air travel. In a surrealistic style, Boucher illustrates the constellations as seen from the northern and southern hemispheres. The constellations of the Zodiac are highlighted in gold and orange. Taurus is missing from this group, as it is obscured by the Earth. Rendered in tones of burnt orange, a spider work of Air France routes appears over the Earth. Wind heads decorate each corner. Here the airplane is master not just of the sky, but the whole universe, connecting the passenger not merely to earthly destinations, but to the heavenly spheres themselves. Chromolithography Chromolithography is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired product. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery. Publication History The printer has utilized chromolithographic printing techniques to achieve splendid rich tones throughout. This map was printed for Air France by Perceval of Paris. This chart is dated via a reference number in the lower left, 443/P/ 10-50, suggesting a 1950 publication date. We also note examples with a reference number 443/P/ 10-53, suggesting a second edition. References: Rumsey 8055.000 (1953 edition).…

Average. Spotting throughout. Trimmed to neat line. Closed tears extending .25 inches into printed border professionally repaired on verso. Priced accordingly. Size 23 x 37.25 Inches. One of Lucien Boucher's more iconic images, this is his c. 1952 promotional map of the world of Air France in its large format edition. Boucher utilizes a beautiful double hemisphere projection, shading the continents in a rich blue. Air France routes (highlighted in red) crisscross the globe, connecting world capitals and shrinking travel times. A Lockheed Constellation appears just east of Florida over the Atlantic, its iconic triple-tail recognizable. Neptune sits astride a sea monster in the center of the Pacific ,and a whale surfaces off the coast of Japan. Sailing ships are illustrated in the oceans, and another sea monster swims southeast of Madagascar. The surround, on a field of burgundy, features illustrations of global historic events, flora, fauna, and cultures, all in a mid-century modern aesthetic. Publication History and Census This map was created by Lucien Boucher and printed by Perceval of Paris c. 1952. We note two examples cataloged in OCLC: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Stanford University. References: Rumsey 8538.000. OCLC 953572712.…

Very good. One minor marginal mend, else excellent. Size 23.5 x 38.25 Inches. This is a 1939 Lucien Boucher Air France pictorial map of the world on the eve of World War II. Created during an era when air travel was still relatively new, Boucher contrasts earlier modes of transportation with aviation. People from around the world travel via carriage, on horseback, and foot, and rarely venture far from their homes. Boucher's map traces Air France's routes across Europe, Africa, South America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, from Paris to Hong Kong, highlighting the 'ease' with which travelers could visit parts of the world that had previously felt inaccessible. The colorful vignettes of ships dotted across the world's oceans provide an even starker contrast, mainly when set against the massive silhouette of an airplane along the top border. Publication History and Census This map was created by Lucien Boucher and published by Air France in 1939. An example is part of the David Rumsey Map Collection, and it is not cataloged in OCLC. Dust Jacket Included. Average. Even overall toning. Soiling. Size 14 x 22.75 Inches. The finest of Lucien Boucher's iconic maps drawn for Air France, this is a 1951 medium-format edition of his beautiful double hemisphere pictorial map of the constellations. Boucher's work for Air France is considered an embodiment of the golden age of air travel. A Closer Look Boucher illustrates the constellations as seen from the northern and southern hemispheres. The constellations of the Zodiac are highlighted in gold and orange. Taurus is missing from this group, as it is obscured by the Earth. Rendered in tones of burnt orange, Air France's route network appears over the Earth. Wind heads decorate each corner. Here the airplane is master not just of the sky, but the whole universe, connecting the passenger not merely to earthly destinations, but to the heavenly spheres themselves. This chart is dated via a reference number in the lower left, 557/P./4-51, suggesting a 1951 publication date. This is the smaller format of the two editions of this wonderful work that we are aware of, with editions of the larger format edition published in 1950 and 1953, based on inferences from reference numbers that appear on those examples.…

Good. Mounted on heavy linen. A few old tears expertly repaired. Size 24.75 x 38.75 Inches. This is a 1937 Lucien Boucher pictorial art-deco map of the world promoting the global routes of Air France. It is one of a sereis of iconic maps Boucher issued at the dawn of the Air Age. A Closer Look Coverage is centered roughly on Paris but extends east and west to include all of Asia and Africa, as well as parts of North America, South America, and Australia. Bold red lines trace Air Frances's pioneering routes, particularly its coverage of South America, its proposed trans-Atlantic flight to New York, and its impressive routes to Southeast Asia, including stops in Bangkok, Saigon, Loung Prabang, and Hanoi. People and places are represented pictorially: the Arc de Triomphe marks Paris, skyscrapers identify New York, and a bagpiper appears near London. Monuments mark Budapest, Montevideo, and Baghdad, while stylized vignettes of local inhabitants decorate all five continents. Publication History and Census This map was drawn in 1937 by Lucien Boucher and published by Perceval in Paris for Air France. There were a total of 600 printed, all numbered. Numbers 1 to 250 were issued on Arches Paper, while the remaining sheets, from 251 to 600, were issued on Canson and Montgolfier Paper. The present example, no. 291, is part of this latter group. It is unclear how many have survived as this is one of Boucher's rarer Air France maps. We note two cataloged examples: the David Rumsey Map Collection and the National Air and Space Museum.
