In this sonnet sequence the speaker urges the young man to marry and to beget children in order to preserve his beauty and achieve everlasting life. The power of the young man to perpetuate himself by biological generation is confronted to poetry as another method to reach immortality (Cheney, 126/128).In sonnet 15 the speaker depicts the mortality of all living creatures and points out that the young man, too, will fall victim to the transitory nature of things. Nevertheless in the couplet he 'sells' himself as a poet whose verse would give his young patron immortality. This idea is immediately dismissed in the following sonnet 16 where he urges the young man not to rely on his sonnets alone and recommends biological procreation as the superior mean to represent the young man's beauty adequately. In sonnet 17 the persona finally describes how procreation and poetry can work together to reach double immortality. Here again the speaker points out that his poetry is of far lesser worth to give immortality to the young man's beauty than his own creation of progeny would be.Dispraising his own works in favour of the begetting of children is very contrary to what one would expect from a poet. Furthermore, it remains open to question how the speaker's understatement of his own art and his convincingly depiction of the omnipresence of mortality go together with his courageous promise to immortalize the young man in verse. It will therefore be interesting to find out which techniques the speaker applies to make the young man procreate and what this might reveal about the true nature of his interest to immortalize the young man. By responding to these questions, one can only come to the conclusion that the speaker has other reasons than those of personal affection for wishing to keep the young man's beauty in being.After having presented some formal aspects of the sonnets, the first main part of the paper will be concerned with the question of how mortality and passage of beauty are depicted in the sonnets. Special emphasis will be put on the concepts of vertex and war contributing to make the young man realize the instability of his beauty and showing him methods to preserve it.The second main part of the paper will deal with the speaker's comparison of his poetry to the supposed superior power of procreation.

The present paper examines what enables the speaker to envision the Second Coming and how his vision is linked to the Biblical model. How is the breakdown of the world depicted and what are revealed to be its possible causes.The poem's title 'The Second Coming' makes reference to the Biblical reappearance of Christ, as prophesied in Matthew 24 and the Book of Revelation of St. John in the New Testament. According to Christian belief, Christ will return to conquer Satan and the forces of evil, before presiding over a thousand-year reign of peace on Earth. True to the Biblical pattern, the speaker of the poem envisions the breakdown of the present state of the world and the dawn of a new age. He adds, however, a sinister twist to the idea of the Second Coming, suggesting that the return of Christ might just as well become the arrival of the Antichrist.I will consequently go on to conclude that the poem presents the world as a perfectly balanced system of two opposing forces or principles such as: centrifugal vs. centripetal force in physics, democracy vs. aristocracy in politics, Christ vs. Antichrist in religion etc. Whenever this opposition is completely cancelled, chaos will be its consequence. All this is, however not to say that chaos sounds for the final phase of existence. On the contrary, it denotes but a phase of transition, as the world is subject to constant change and history moves in a cyclic pattern. Chaos can hence be described as being part of a greater system.I will proceed in a more or less chronological order starting with the 1st stanza where the speaker describes the present state of the world. The focus will be put here on the omnipresence of chaos and its relation with the laws of physics, political systems and the divine judgement.The second main part of the paper will deal with the 2nd stanza which presents the speaker's future vision of the Second Coming. The detailed description of the 'Antichrist' in the poem will be compared to the depiction of Christ in the Bible. In the last stanza the speaker looks back in history, as if to back up his prophetic vision of the breakdown of the Christian era.

In the 3rd stanza the street scene is left altogether, instead a single woman is depicted lying in her bed. In a state of expanded awareness she gains a superior view on the world. In the last stanza I shall indicate how the blindness of everyday routine hinders the rest of the city dwellers from noticing this sort of spiritual revelation.The meta-poetic references in the end overtly unmask the speaker as being a poet, making plain that the poem is not to be taken as a means to communicate reality, but rather as the experience of a mental image.

Naturally, one is tempted to conclude that for the duration of the war all schools were closed but the whole opposite was true. Schools were evacuated over and over again and despite bombed out classrooms, a short supply of teachers and material, lessons were continued both to maintain the illusion of normal life and to demonstrate resistance to Nazi- Germany.It will be thus interesting to examine the educational, social and personal problems children were exposed to during the chaos of evacuation and to investigate how school life changed under the difficulties of World War II. Furthermore, it will be important to ask how the experience of war and evacuation shaped the hopes and expectations of British people for post-wartimes.Responding to these questions there will be given evidence for the assumption that the experience of evacuation and schooling during the war had not only a traumatic effect on most children, but has also contributed to raise public awareness of the shortcomings of the socially divisive educational system and thereby served as a catalyst for the educational reforms of the 1940s that culminated in the 1944 Education Act.The first part of this paper portrays the three major phases of evacuation and describes how the problems that occurred with the billeting of the evacuees at their host families' homes contributed to the growing awareness of social differences.The second paragraph will deal with the realities of schooling during the War. A particular emphasis will be put on the problems that accrue from the shortages of school buildings, school personnel and instructional material. It will be equally important to investigate how these deficiencies changed school life in respect to the curriculum, the role of teachers and children's outlook on schooling. In the third part of the paper, I will go on to explain how the results of the educational reforms and discussions in the 1940s reflect the experience of war and evacuation. After having presented the main ideas of the Spens and Norwood Report, particular emphasis will be put on the 1944 Education Act and its revolutionary character at the time, followed by an overview of the most important criticisms of the Act. Finally, there will be a conclusion to point out the most important results of the paper.

The 1970s, however, saw a major shift in focus away from form to meaning. This basic insight led to the emergence of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in the 1980s which until now serves as an umbrella term for a number of approaches, valuing communicative competence higher than linguistic knowledge. Among the strongest versions of CLT, there is Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) which basically promotes the use of tasks as the core unit of foreign language teaching (cf. Larsen-Freeman, 2000:121). Accordingly, it will be the aim of the present paper to verify whether TBLT is also a valid approach for the EFL classroom and how this can be justified in terms of current teaching objectives and learners' needs. The first section of the paper will provide the theoretical background to TBLT. It will be relevant here to compare different definitions of the term task, in order to identify useful criteria that help to distinguish a task from the concept of an exercise. Moreover, the functions and interrelations of a few selected types and components of tasks shall be discussed. In the second section, the focus will be put on factors to consider when implementing task-based language learning in EFL. For this purpose, the main principles of TBLT will be portrayed drawing on the potential assets and drawbacks of the approach. It will be relevant here to answer the following controversial questions related to TBLT: 1. How to avoid that the focus on 'authentic' communication is done at the expense of formal accuracy 2. How does TBLT affect teacher and learner roles in a TBLT classroom 3. How can tasks be used to assess what learners can do in the L2 Finally, there will be provided a sample lesson of TBLT. This lesson is built around a speed-dating activity and is designed for grade 11/1. An attempt shall be made here to analyze how the lesson relates to the formerly defined criteria of TBLT and how this meets the latest standards of the official curriculum of Brandenburg for ESL at upper secondary school level.

Dies ist insofern relevant, als dass die Bedeutung der Farbadjektive in hohem Maße polysem ist, weshalb ihre konkrete Bedeutung über Kotext und Kontext disambiguiert werden muss.Zusätzlich nehmen die Farben blanc und noir hier eine gewisse Sonderrolle ein, da sie im eigentlichen Sinn gar keine Farben sind. Aus physikalischer Perspektive absorbiert die Farbe schwarz alle Wellenlängen des Lichts und repräsentiert damit im Grunde die absolute Abwesenheit aller Farben. Weiß hingegen ist gewissermaßen die Summe aller Farben, da es alle Wellenlängen des Lichts bricht. Vom Rest des Farbspektrums abgekoppelt, stehen sie einander ähnlich wie hell und dunkel, Tag und Nacht als Gegensätze gegenüber.Diese Gegensätzlichkeit spiegelt sich in vielen Kulturen auch in ihrer symbolischen Bedeutung wieder, wo sie oft als 'das Gute' und 'das Böse' gegenübergestellt werden. Es ist folglich interessant zu sehen, in welchen Bedeutungen und Konnotationen blanc und noir im Korpus, der sich aus französischen Pressetexten zusammensetzt, verwendet werden.Im ersten Teil der Arbeit sollen dafür zunächst verschiedene sprachtheoretische Positionen gegenübergestellt werden, mit deren Hilfe sich die Kategorisierung der Farbbezeichnungen mehr oder weniger gut erklären lassen. Desweiteren soll am Beispiel von blanc und noir verdeutlicht werden, weshalb der Begriff der Farbbezeichnungen nur schwer zu definieren ist.Ausgehend von den Vorüberlegungen sollen im Kapitel 3 schließlich die Leitfragen der Arbeit formuliert und die Hypothese vorgestellt werden. Punkt 4 ist dem methodologischen Vorgehen der Studie gewidmet. Im Kapitel 5 soll die semantische Distribution von blanc und noir untersucht werden. Dazu sollen neben Wörterbucheinträgen auch die Korpusdaten quantitativ ausgewertet werden. Neben der Gesamtfrequenz von blanc und noir spielen hier auch der prozentuale Anteil der Farbträger, die semantische Varianz und die Konnotationen der Farblexika eine wichtige Rolle. Im Kapitel 6 sollen die wichtigsten Konkordanzen dann in Rückbezug auf den Theorieteil und unter Einbeziehung der im Korpus vorgenommenen Kategorisierungen am konkreten Beispiel diskutiert werden, bevor die wichtigesten Erkenntnisse der Studie in Hinblick auf die Hypothese in der abschließenden Schlussfolgerung noch einmal zusammengefasst werden.
