On George Washington's birthdate in 1784 Captain John Green and the Empress of China left New York bound for China. With almost every foreign port closed to it, America was desperate to find someone to trade with and hoped that China would be its economic savior. Arriving in Canton, Captain Green and his sailors were met with strange customs and an even stranger language and found to their surprise that the Chinese thought of Americans as barbarians. Despite this, Green was successful and returned to New York with a profit and tales of great riches to be had in the romantic East. Since Americans were more popular than the English in China, powerful Hong merchants, such as the famous Houqua, conducted a brisk and friendly business with them. Richly colored silks, delicate porcelain and aromatic teas were shipped to the United States to delight many a Federalist housewife. But what could America send east, to China? The western nation became desperate to find something to trade. Finally, a not~so~happy solution was arrived at~opium. Following in the footsteps of the British, Americans carried the drug to China for huge profits. Eventually the ugly business led to the Opium War and with it the end of the old China trade. Francis Carpenter has written a lively account of a time when the lure of Cathay brought adventurous merchants together in a romantic and exciting camaraderie of trade. His intimate knowledge of China, its art and history are woven with skill into a fascinating view of America's first commercial dealings with China. Intricate illustrations by Demi Hitz capture all the beauty and flavor of the East.
