An issue of the 3rd folio ed. Originally published in Paris, 1528. drawings prepared under the direction of Franciscus Vatablus, Regius Professor of Hebrew at Paris. All pages are "ruled" (have hand-drawn or printed lines used to frame the text or guide the reader's eye, a luxury feature and a carry-over from the manuscript tradition. Most commonly, 16th-century books were "ruled in red" (rubricated). This involved drawing thin red ink lines around the edges of the text block to create a neat, professional border. In some cases, horizontal lines were ruled across the page to ensure the text (if handwritten) or the layout (if printed) remained perfectly level and uniform. Hand-ruled Lines were added manually with a stylus or pen after the book was printed, often by a specialist known as a rubricator. By 1540, some printers used a separate pass on the press to print these red lines, though this was more expensive and complex than hand-ruling. The book was ruled for Aesthetics. It mimicked the look of expensive, high-status medieval manuscripts. Red ruling (rubrication) was a mark of luxury because it required additional labor and ink. A "ruled" copy, like this one, was more expensive and intended for wealthy collectors or prestigious institutions.
