A John Cage corrispondono una tale molteplicità di aspetti che risulta persino difficile orientarsi. Se uno non ha dimestichezza con la varietà dei percorsi che il suo pensiero ha realizzato risultando uno dei più influenti e determinanti del Novecento, potrebbe pensare, sbagliando, che fosse stato un personaggio fuori schema, un eclettico, un "inventore", così lo giudicò Schoenberg, riducendo di fatto la sua personalità a una battuta, reiterata poi all'infinito. La sua attività compositiva e progettuale in campo musicale si è rivelata sempre più importante e rimane permeata dal suo pensiero come dalla sua visione dell'arte e della vita. Estetica e filosofia sono aperte al mondo, a quello dei suoni in particolare, alla natura, al caso. Il suo è un percorso partito dall'happening, che trasgrediva il teatro, e dall'invenzione, come quella del pianoforte preparato. Libro.
