Beim Projekt 7351 (Contract No. AF 33(616)-2853. Task No. 73510) ging es um mechanische Eigenschaften, Kriechverhalten und thermische Stabilität von Titanbasislegierungen bei hohen Temperaturen. Der Berichtszeitraum: 7. Januar - 31. Dezember 1955 (Publikation 1. Mai 1956). In dieser Zeit wurden Festigkeitsmechanismen von Titanlegierungen untersucht - ein strategisches Thema der frühen Jet und Raketenära. Die Autoren teilten ihren Bericht in drei Abschnitte. Band 1: die Anfangsphase - Grundlagen, Screening, Legierungsentwurf. Band 2: Vertiefung, Optimierung, Wärmebehandlung - von der Grundlagenforschung zur gezielten Legierungsentwicklung. Unser Band 3: Hochtemperaturmechanik, Kriechverhalten, Stabilität - Qualifizierung der besten Legierungen für reale Hochtemperaturanwendungen. Bei alledem ging es um die Identifikation von Legierungen, die bei 300-550?°C ein günstiges Verhältnis aus Kriechbeständigkeit, Duktilität und Gefügestabilität aufwiesen. Vor dem Hintergrund von Aufrüstung und Abschreckung war der Sinn dieser Neugier nachvollziehbar: das Air Force Materials Laboratory (Wright Air Development Center) suchte Hilfe beim Erreichen seines Ziels, Titan als leichtes, hitzebeständiges Strukturmaterial für Verdichterstufen von Strahltriebwerken, hitzebelastete Flugzellenbereiche, Raketen und Lenkwaffentechnik zu nutzen.
