Dazu werden zwei bislang getrennte Forschungstraditionen miteinander integriert: die sozial-kognitive Lerntheorie der Vorbildwirkung (Bandura) und die Leistungsmotivationstheorie (McClelland, Atkinson, Weiner, Heckhausen). Diese Verbindung eroffnet neue Fragestellungen, die nun auf experimentelle Weise angegangen werden. Es wird gezeigt, dass Vorbilder nicht nur Nachahmung bewirken konnen, sondern unter bestimmten Bedingungen -Kontraimitation- hervorrufen, durch die das Kind sich gezielt vom Vorbild abhebt. Es wird eine Motivationstheorie der Vorbildwirkung vorgeschlagen, die Verhaltens angleichung an das Vorbild ebenso wie Kontraimitation als das Ergebnis eines komplexen Motivationsprozesses zu erklaren vermag. Da das Buch einleitend einen umfassenden Uberblick sowohl uber die Forschungen zum Vorbildlernen als auch uber die Leistungsmotivations- und Selbstregulationsforschung gibt, wendet es sich nicht nur an Forscher, die an der speziellen Problematik interessiert sind; es eignet sich auch fur einen ersten Einstieg in diese beiden psychologischen Teilgebiete."
