Aggiungi al carrello1st edition. Fine copy in the original colour printed boards. Particularly and uncommonly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new. Physical description; 101 pages: illustrations (some color); 28 cm. Notes; Catalog prepared in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Phillips Collect…ion, Washington, D.C., Feb. 12-May 15, 2011. Includes bibliographical references. Contents; David Smith invents / by Susan Behrends Frank -- "What sculpture can never be": the photographs of David Smith / by Susan Hamill -- Unity and identity: David Smith's materials and methods / by Peter Stevens -- Illustrations -- Chronology. Summary; Discusses selected steel sculptures fabricated by the American painter-sculptor David Smith (1906-1965), as well as Smith's drawings and paintings. Emphasizes his investigation of concave/convex forms, and notes his use of painted surfaces. Includes essays on Smith's photography of his own works and on his surfaces and materials"--Provided by publisher. Abstract Expressionist artist David Smith (1906-1965) was one of the most important American sculptors of the 20th century, yet few publications dedicated to his creative output currently exist. A painter-sculptor in the tradition of Matisse and Picasso, he focused on welded steel sculptures while simultaneously working inventively in two dimensions, in paint, ink, or tempera. David Smith Invents is the first book to focus on the output in all media of the artist's last fifteen years, a period in which he explored concave and convex forms in works welded from steel tanks and pipes that he bought by the rail-car load as industrial waste. Starting in 1953, Smith's efforts resulted in the monumental, personage-like forms of the Tanktotems series, and the later series of Bouquet of Concaves, leading in 1961 to the massive Zigs. Susan Behrends Frank opens a window onto the unusual working process employed by Smith, who was once a welder on an automobile production line. In spite of their industrial manufacture and materials, his works blurred the boundaries between sculpture, painting, and drawing, and his sculptures during this period were created in a pictorial fashion, in a single plane. One of his practices was to draw a white rectangle on the floor and position the metal parts of his sculpture within its boundaries. Featured throughout the book are extraordinary photographs taken by Smith of his sculptures, along with an enlightening essay on the photos by Sarah Hamill. Peter Stevens discusses Smith's materials and surfaces. Subjects; Smith, David 1906-1965 - Exhibitions. Smith, David 1906-1965 - Criticism and interpretation. Steel sculpture, American - Exhibitions. Abstract Expressionism; Individual artists; Sculpture. ART / Individual Artists / Monographs. ART / Sculpture & Installation. ART / Collections, Catalogs, Exhibitions / General. 1 Kg.

Hardcover. Rich purple boards with gilt text on the spine. Matte purple dust jacket with lilac and yellow text on the spine. Light gray-green end pages. 224 pages; profusely illustrated with color images. "The Phillips Collection, America's first museum of modern art, was founded in 1921 by Duncan Phillips (1886-1966), a Washing…ton DC collector who played a vital role in introducing America to contemporary art. Unusually for his time, Phillips saw American artists as fully equal to their European counterparts, often hanging their works side by side. Moreover, Phillips chose to buy and exhibit works according to stylistic continuities and affinities, reflecting the visual connections between various artistic expressions, past and present. Master Paintings from The Phillips Collection highlights 108 masterworks from the Phillips's permanent collection and offers insight into the creation of one of the greatest private collections of modern art in the world." Contents are as follows: Art and intimacy / Robert Hughes -- Seeing beautifully : a vision of the whole / Eliza E. Rathbone -- Duncan Phillips : champion of American art / Susan Behrends Frank -- Master paintings / Susan Badder, Susan Behrends Frank, Johanna Halford-MacLeod, Renée Maurer, Klaus Ottmann, Eliza E. Rathbone, Elsa Smithgall, Vesela Sretenovic. VG/VG: Exlibrary book in great shape. Stamp on the front free end page. Clean body pages and solid binding.
