Denn in diesem, für eine Retrospektive vergleichsweise kleinen Katalog, kommen zwei Dinge zusammen, die sonst eher rar gesät sind: Ein konzentriertes Resümee und eine lakonische Selbstvergewi…sserung, weil '84 das Jahr gewesen sein dürfte, in dem Baumgartner die Entscheidung traf, den Gartenbau endgültig an den Nagel zu hängen, um ins Fach der Malerei zu wechseln. Baumgartners Rückschau ''84 und nun' umfasst 47 Bilder - ein Bild pro Jahr also etwa, das Bestand vor dem eigenen Auge hat. Kein schlechter Schnitt. Aber Baumgartner ist dabei gar nicht so sehr am Chronologischen interessiert, er sucht vielmehr den thematischen Vergleich. Das erlaubt ihm (und uns natürlich auch) ein ungebundenes Herumwundern zwischen Bildern unterschiedlichen Datums, ein Vor- und Zurückspulen des eigenen Schauens, in dem Verworfenes und Neugedachtes in einander übergeht. Eine Überprüfung der eigenen Arbeit, nur eben nicht an der Atelierwand aufgereiht. Auffallend dabei die Faszination für Nebel und das Dunstige überhaupt. Baumgartner malt die selbe Nebel-Landschaft gleich drei mal im Abstand von vier Jahren. Er tut es auf eine gewisse Art seriell, aber dann auch wieder nicht. Vielmehr scheint ihn die Frage nach dem richtigen Bildaufbau umzutreiben, die er nun an den Betrachter weitergibt. Franz Baumgartner lotet in ''84 und nun' aber auch neue fotografischen Möglichkeiten für die Landschaftsmalerei aus. Er experimentiert mit Drohnen-Aufnahmen, die Landschaften werden zunehmend flächig, wir tauchen ein, in eine von Maschine schraffierte Welt. Und dann auf einmal ist sie wieder da: Die '84. Diesmal mit Motiven, die sie im Titel tragen, aber aus den 2020er Jahren stammen. Als wäre Baumgartner jetzt erst klar gewesen, wie er das Bild, das ihn schon so lange umtrieb, angehen soll. Damit wäre das '84' also auch im 'nun' angelangt. Man könnte Baumgartner für einen ausgesprochenen Maler des Niederrheins halten, wie die großen Holländer Ruysdael, van Goyen oder Koekkoek, wüsste man nicht, dass er auch großartige Landschaften in Italien, Galizien, in der Sahara und anderswo gemalt hat. Aber hat er dort nicht auch seinen Niederrhein gemalt, flacher Horizont, weiter Himmel, nur vor anderer Kulisse Wie dem auch sei: Der begleitende Text von Christoph Klimke, ordnet Baumgartners Bildwelt assoziativ in die Realitäten auf dem Land ein. Und zeigt eine spannende Interpretation, wie es immer dann passiert, wenn ein Schriftsteller und Dichter die Malerei ins Auge fasst. Ob das Baumgartner mit '84 und nun' nur Retrospektive oder eher eine Autobiografie auf Leinwand ist - mag jeder für sich entscheiden. Man könnte Baumgartner für einen ausgesprochenen Maler des Niederrheins halten, wie die großen Holländer Ruysdael, van Goyen oder Koekkoek, wüsste man nicht, dass er auch großartige Landschaften in Italien, Galizien, in der Sahara und anderswo gemalt hat. Aber hat er dort nicht auch seinen Niederrhein gemalt, flacher Horizont, weiter Himmel, nur vor anderer Kulisse Wie dem auch sei: Der begleitende Text von Christoph Klimke, ordnet Baumgartners Bildwelt assoziativ in die Realitäten auf dem Land ein. Und zeigt eine spannende Interpretation, wie es immer dann passiert, wenn ein Schriftsteller und Dichter die Malerei ins Auge fasst.
