Er wirkte in den 1730er-Jahren als Organist an mehreren Prager Kirchen und verließ wie viele Komponistenkollegen seine böhmische Heimat. Von 1745 bis 1756 wirkte er in Mainz als Hofkapellmeister, wo vermutlich die vorliegende Missa pastorella entstanden ist. Die letzten fast 20 Jahre seines Lebens bereiste er ohne feste Anstellung Residenzen und Klöster im Deutschen Reich und in Italien. Zachs Pastoralmesse ist ein überaus origineller und unkonventioneller Beitrag zu einer in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts florierenden Gattung. Das Werk vereint Zachs eigenwilligen Personalstil, der von überraschenden harmonischen Wendungen und starker rhythmischer Differenziertheit geprägt ist, mit typisch pastoralen Elementen, die weihnachtliche Stimmung evozieren.
