A partire dal IV secolo, è attestato a Roma, presso la basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, uno scrinium della Chiesa romana, che aveva la duplice funzione di biblioteca, per conservare i libri, e di archivio per i documenti. Seguendone la storia dai suoi albori, il presente volume si focalizza soprattutto sulla sua trasformazione in Biblioteca dei Papi, dopo il loro definitivo trasferimento in Vaticano nel xv secolo. Una prima sede della Biblioteca Vaticana, all'interno del Palazzo Apostolico presso San Pietro, venne predisposta dal fondatore Niccolò V (1447-1455); dopo un secolo, però, lo spazio non era più sufficiente a contenere quella che era ormai diventata la maggiore biblioteca del mondo, e Sisto V (1585-1590) decise di far costruire il Salone Sistino, una nuova sede nel Cortile del Belvedere. Un gioiello monumentale, che si estende per oltre mille metri quadrati ed è decorato al suo interno con affreschi dedicati alla storia delle biblioteche e dei Concili ecumenici, e con raffigurazioni degli inventori degli alfabeti e della Roma del tempo. Dalla fine dell'Ottocento, poi, la Biblioteca raddoppiò i propri spazi di lettura e decuplicò i propri depositi, fino ad arrivare agli attuali 80.000 manoscritti, circa 1.600.000 stampati (tra cui quasi 9.000 incunaboli), incisioni, disegni, monete e medaglie. Protagonisti assoluti di questo luogo unico al mondo sono naturalmente i libri, o, se vogliamo, i codici, le pergamene, i manoscritti più famosi per apporto culturale, per preziosità del documento e per valore artistico. Questi protagonisti sono menzionati e commentati secondo la cronologia della loro entrata nella Biblioteca, così l'ultimo è il Papiro Bodmer XIV-XV, datato tra il II e il III secolo d.C., con i Vangeli secondo Luca e secondo Giovanni.
