"Phillips wrote Some Reminiscences in London in 1924 during his… last few months as chairman of The Central Mining & Investment Corporation, Limited; he was in his seventieth year. His official letter of resignation dated 31 December 1924, terminated a long career and intimate association with the South African diamond and gold industry. He had resolved to retire eventually to the Cape when he purchased Vergelegen in 1917 and so early in 1925 he sailed to South Africa, exactly fifty years after he first went to the country. . Some Reminiscences reveals a man who was a keen observer and a shrewd commentator, and covers a wide range of events of historical, political, and economic importance. It also affords interesting glimpses of Phillips's personal pursuits, such as archaeology and reading.".

8vo; original green boards, lettered in white on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 228, incl. index; black-and-white illustrations. Dustwrapper partially sunned, slightly rubbed and edgeworn; merest trace of foxing to edges and reverse of free endpapers. Very good condition. Sir Lionel Phillips (1855-1936) typified the self-made… men who were at the forefront of South Africa's boom following the discovery of diamond and gold deposits in the late 1800s. He was a close associate of Wernher and Beit. At the heart of affairs at the time of the Jameson Raid, Phillips was sentenced to death by Kruger's government, but the sentence was softened. "Having published Some reminiscences (London, 1924), Phillips formally retired in 1925. . On his death The Cape Argus stated in a leading article: 'If he had any enemies at all, they would be the first to admit that Sir Lionel was a very gallant gentleman who retained his ideals to the end of his long life and employed great talents to the advantage of his country.'" - DSAB II, pp. 245-6.
