First edition. 318pp. and 16 black and white illustrations by Peter Fraser, including a map of the Shetland Isles showing incidents in the book. The author of this book was a native, and lover, of Shetland. His aim in this book has been to present a "Saga" descriptive of the Isles in a series of pictures, placed roughly in chronological order, of notable periods or epochs of Shetland's absorbing and astonishing history. He starts from the earliest times and brings his story down to the crofter of the 1930s. It includes accounts of the coming of the Norseman and Vikings; the settlement of the islands; the time of the Spanish Armada; the great Dutch fishery; the troubled periods of Patrick Stewart; piracy and the press-gang; whale fishing; and the development of the fishing centre of Lerwick. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling (dulled) on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. There is uneven sunning to the spine and the rear board. Light to moderate foxing to edges. No inscriptions. Signed by the author.
